| CHAPTER 1 | SEL0056 | SWAMI KRISHNANANDA

Beings are higher or lower according to the degree of Intelligence that lights up their nature .

Entities in the universe are differentiated through their modes of mentation , which are controlled by the intensity of the Truth presented by them .

Nature appears to be Spirit distorted in multitudinous ways and expressed in different degrees of revelation .

a idanim smrtam satyam etattad akhilam maya
nirvikalpacidabhasa esa atma smi sarvagah ( 19 )

Prahlada continued to contemplate :

I am the all-pervading reality which is devoid of objectivity and therefore percepts and concepts.

I am pure consciousness.

It is by this consciousness that all things, from a little pot to the mighty sun, are perceived.

Ah, I now recollect the truth that I am the self which is omnipresent, in which there is no conceptualisation.

It is by that self that all the senses and their experiences are made possible, for it is the inner light.

It is because of that inner light that these objects acquire their apparent substantiality.

It is thanks to that inner light of consciousness, which is utterly free from all modifications, that the sun is hot, the moon is cool, the mountain is heavy and water is liquid.

It is the cause of all the effects that manifest as this creation, but it is itself uncaused.

It is on account of that inner light of consciousness that the characteristic nature of the diverse objects arises.

Because it is formless and because it is the cause of all effects, this universe has arisen in it, with all its diversity.

It alone is the cause of the manifestation of the trinity ( Brahma the creator, Visnu the preserver and Siva the redeemer ); but it is not itself caused.

I salute this self which is its own light, free from the duality of knower and known, subject and object.

In it exist all things of this universe; and into it they enter.

Whatever this inner self thinks of, that happens everywhere — apparently as an external reality.

When thought of by this consciousness, these things seem to come into being; when thought of as nonexistent, they reach their end.

Thus, all these infinite objects appear in the limitless space of consciousness.

They appear to grow and they appear to diminish, even as a shadow seems to grow and to diminish in the light of the sun.

This self or inner light of consciousness is unknown and unseen: it is attained by those who have purified their heart.

But by the holy ones it is seen in the supremely pure cosmic space ( dimension ) of consciousness.

This self exists in an undivided state in the three worlds — from Brahma the creator to the blade of grass, as the infinite and self-luminous consciousness.

It is one, without beginning and end; it exists as the all, as the inner experiencing of all mobile and immobile beings.

JUST BEING THE BEING " I AM "

"Meditation means to have an
objective or hold onto something. You
are that something. Just being the being
‘I am’. "

Meditation means to ponder or have your attention
focused on some object, image or ‘mantra’. You do
so till what you have held in meditation disappears,
or you can say you the ‘subject’ and the ‘object’
merge into a unity. When you ‘just be’ or are in the
knowledge ‘I am’ only, you are both the subject
and the object of meditation. It is the ‘being
meditating on “being”’ and as a result both cancel
out each other and what remains ultimately is the
Absolute.

"The gate of heaven is wide open,
without a single obstruction before it.
I sometimes wonder when I will wake up?
Wake up to see that there is truly nothing to fear.
What can I say that hasn't already been said?
What can I do that hasn't already been done?
The joy is simply in the Being.
Not being this or that.
I like watching the sun in the morning.
And the moon watches over me at night."

Everything is already moving smoothly in time with your natural pace.
Trust this.
If you start to think ‘I want to awaken quickly’, then that comes from the mind. Don’t try to force life or you will hurt yourself.
When you get onto the plane to meet your beloved, who is waiting for you in another country, it may take eight hours to fly there. You won't say to the pilot: Please take me there fast. I need a kiss and a cuddle urgently.
Because what is going to happen if you say this? You won't enjoy the flight and also, the pilot won't enjoy either. You are already on board. Just sit back and enjoy the flight and all the in-flight entertainments.
Don't go to sleep, but also, don't hurry.
Just relax. Remain in that natural inner quietude and be carried by life.

Swamiji expands on the subject of Enriching : One of the major principles of life and how it expands your relationships. In the relationship with others, if you are feeling powerless, you will have the same powerlessness in the relationship with you. Enriching is - you taking responsibility with integrity and authenticity that you will commit to continuously enrich, which is expanding yourself and life in and around you. When you are complete with you, world will be complete with you. When you are incomplete with you, world will be incomplete with you. Only when you have healed the relationship with you, only when you trust, you can raise yourself, you can save yourself by yourself

Devotee: Swamiji. I want to know the meaning of 'Samarpan' - Surrender. I am not able to understand the meaning.
Swamiji: Samarpan means, taking the responsibility of the whole universe, and the mind which is afraid to take the responsibility, surrendering that mind at the feet of Responsibility itself is surrender. Listen! When you want to take responsibility for everybody, there will be one corner of your mind afraid to take responsibility. Surrendering that corner at the feet of Responsibility is surrender. When you surrender yourself to any god, take the responsibility of the world like that god. What is your Ishta Devata - favorite deity?
Devotee: Dakshinamurthy.
Swamiji: Dakshinamurthy is responsible for sharing the knowledge, enlightenment to the world. When you surrender to Dakshinamurthy, you have to take responsibility for enriching the world with enlightenment science just like Dakshinamurthy. Be like Dakshinamurthy. That is surrendering to Dakshinamurthy. Take responsibility of Dakshinamurthy to teach the world. That is surrendering to Dakshinamurthy. Understand, take responsibility.
For example, if anybody surrenders to me, I will tell, ‘Then do what I am doing!’ What I am doing? Enriching the world with knowledge! I will also tell him to do that. Only then your surrender is right.

Same way, I tell you, when you surrender to Dakshinamurthy, take responsibility of Dakshinamurthy and teach these principles to the world. That is surrendering to Dakshinamurthy. Okay?
So, from today, remember, you have surrendered to Dakshinamurthy and you have to be responsible like Dakshinamurthy to the world, teaching the Science of Enlightenment.
Wherever you go, to your employees, to your boss, to everyone, you will constantly, (in) whatever way you can, you will teach them Integrity, Authenticity, Responsibility and Enriching. Have you seen Dakshinamurthy’s statue or figure?
Devotee: Yes. It is in my mind!
Swamiji: That Damaru he carries is Integrity. Fire is Authenticity. And Chin Mudra he shows is Responsibility. And the leaf he is having in his hand is Enriching. He is doing all the four continuously. You also decide to do the four. You will see you will experience Dakshinamurthy inside you and you will radiate Dakshinamurthy outside you

Even after realising the Self, don't be surprised if your mind sends thoughts like: `Now, you are boring!’ or `You are always going to be alone,’ or, `It cannot be this simple,’ whatever might catch your attention, it will try. In fact, it will keep sending little messages to see which key works to break your resolve so that you return to the old false identity; such is the game of existence.

The fire of the mind may go out, but its smoke lingers on awhile. Don't panic, at a certain point you may even see the humor in it. Simply, remain as the unchanging, imageless Self you are.

APOLOGY TO THE HORNETS

One day when Bhagavan was climbing the Hill he knocked against a hornets’nest and was attacked and very badly stung on the leg and thigh. He felt remorse for having disturbed them.

Questioned by Muruganar in the form of the following verse:

Sighting an overgrown, green-leaved bush, and
When stepping on it and stung by hornets to have legs
swollen,
Venkata, in truth, why was an accidental intrusion Treated without mercy, just as a wanton transgression?

Sri Bhagavan responded likewise in verse:

When I was stung by hornets in revenge Upon the leg until it was inflamed, Although it was by chance I stepped upon Their nest, constructed in a leafy bush; What kind of mind is his if he does not At least repent for doing such a wrong?

The spiritual man who argues that God is there and the atheist who argues that God is not there are both fools. God is not research material. He is something to be felt or experienced inside you. He is not to be spoken or argued about. Questions like 'Where is he?', 'Why hasn’t he appeared?', 'Has he gone on long leave?' are all unnecessary. By discussing it this way, you cannot realise God. If you believe in God, just focus on how to improve the quality of your life with that faith; that will do.

When I [Rangan] started to visit Bhagavan regularly at Skandashram, it occurred to me that it would be good if I became a sannyasin [mendicant monk]. I knew that this was a foolish and irresponsible dream because it would leave my family, already in a precarious financial position, with no one to support them. However, the thought would not leave me. One night, while I was lying in my bed at Skandashram, I was unable to sleep because this thought kept recurring so strongly.

As I was turning uneasily in my bed, Bhagavan came to my side and asked me, ‘What is the matter? Are you in pain?’ ‘

Venkataraman, [Bhagavan’s childhood name]’ I replied, ‘I want to adopt sannyasa.’

Bhagavan went away and came back with a copy of Bhakta Vijayam, an anthology of the lives of some famous saints who lived in western India many centuries ago. He opened the book and read out the story in which Saint Vithoba decided to take sannyasa. In the story his son, Jnanadeva, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, gave him the following advice.

‘Wherever you are, whether in worldly society or the forest, the same mind is always with you. It is the same old mind, wherever you reside.’

After reading this out Bhagavan added, ‘You can attain jnana even while you are living in samsara [worldly activities]’.

‘Then why did you become a sannyasin?’ I countered.

‘That was my prarabdha [destiny],’ replied Bhagavan. ‘Life in the family is difficult and painful, no doubt, but it is easier to become a jnani while living as a householder.’ (The Power of the Presence, part one, pp. 6-7)

Question: Should not a man renounce everything in order that he might get liberation?

Bhagavan: Even better than the man who thinks ‘I have renounced everything’ is the one who does his duty but does not think ‘I do this’ or ‘I am the doer’. Even a sannyasi who thinks ‘I am a sannyasi’ cannot be a true sannyasi, whereas a householder who does not think ‘I am a householder’ is truly a sannyasi. Sankalpa [thought] creates the world. The peace attained on the destruction of sankalpas is the [permanent] destruction of the world. (Padamalai, p. 264, v. 6)

The world is seen distinctly only in the waking and dream states in which sankalpas [thoughts] have emerged. Is it ever seen during sleep, where sankalpas do not emerge even slightly? Sankalpas alone are the material substance of the world. (Guru Vachaka Kovai, v. 29)
