3. GOING FOR REFUGE

12. Taking refuge in this has a great purpose,
For unfathomable qualities will be gathered thereby,
These beings will be embraced by a compassionate intent,
And the Dharma of the unequaled, great noble ones will
flourish.

This was the third chapter of the ' Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras ', the chapter on going for refuge.

3. GOING FOR REFUGE

11. This is a commitment with the wish for the nature of that, and
it should be understood to arise from compassion.
Omniscient wakefulness ensues from this, as do benefit and
happiness, and no aversion when facing hardship.
As for definitive emergence, this always has the qualities that
are relied on in all the vehicles.
Attained through symbols and the intrinsic nature, the way
that the wise go for refuge is supreme.

3. GOING FOR REFUGE

10. The wise surpass the gatherings that include the listeners
By means of virtues that are vast, tremendously beneficial,
infinite, always constant, and inexhaustible.
These virtues are, moreover, the mundane, the supramundane,
the through ripening, and the attainment of mastery.
They are not exhausted by the pacification of the aggregates.

Always oversee the array of factors that accord with Great

And posses complete and genuine mastery over phenomena.

2. First, this determination is difficult,
And the practice throughout many thousand of eons is
difficult as well.
The purpose is great, for once accomplished, there is benefit for beings.
Therefore, taking refuge in this Great Vehicle has a supreme objective.

These four elements distinguish the supreme vehicle.

Is known as supreme among all who take refuge.

7. REALITY

10. The Dharma taught by the Able One is presented well.
Intelligence is directed toward the root, the basic field of
phenomena.
Those stable in the awareness that what moves in the mind is mere thought
Are swift in crossing the ocean of qualities.

This was the seventh chapter of the 'Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras', the chapter on reality.

7. REALITY

8. Becoming aware that there is nothing apart from the mind,
The bodhisattva also realizes that the mind does not exist at all.
Having seen that the two do not exist, the intelligent one
abides
In the basic field of phenomena, which does not contain them.

9. For the wise, the power of nonconceptual wakefulness
Always makes everything equal in all regards.
This clears the wilderness of supported flaws
Just as a powerful antidote dispels a poison.

7. REALITY

6. When a bodhisattva has thoroughly gathered the
accumulations
Of merit and wakefulness beyond measure,
The bodhisattva contemplates the Dharma in a most decisive way,
And thereby realizes that the forms of objects are the result of expression.

7. Hence, knowing objects to be mere expressions,
The bodhisattva recognizes that such appearances are mind
only,
And then realizes the basic field of phenomena,
Free from the characteristics of duality, in direct perception.

7. REALITY

3. Based on a mere mistake, beings do not realize
The continuous nature of suffering.
While not aware, there is awareness; there is suffering, yet they
do not suffer.
This is the nature of phenomena, and yet it is not that nature.

4. When they clearly experience the dependent arising of things,
Why do beings take recourse to creation by something else ?
How can they fail to see what exists, and instead see what does not ?
What sort of dense darkness is this ?

5. There is ultimately no difference whatsoever
Between peace and birth;
Yet it is said that those performing virtuous acts
Bring an end to birth and thereby gain peace.

7. REALITY

2. The nature of the belief in a self dont characterize the self,
Neither do the negative bases, for their characteristics differ.
Apart from these two there is nothing: this is a mistake that occurred.
Liberation is, therefore, the cessation of a mere mistake.

7. REALITY

1. Not existent and not nonexistent, not the same and not different,
Without origination and destruction, decrease and increase,
Without becoming pure, it still becomes pure -
These are marks of the ultimate.

' Arya Maitreya's Aspiration '

Prostrations to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas!
Ananda, in previous times when the Bodhisattva, the great sattva Arya Maitreya,
performed the deeds of a Bodhisattva, he placed his Dharma robe upon one shoulder,
and three times each day and three times each night, bent his right knee to the
ground, and folding his hands, made this aspiration prayer:
Prostrations to all the Buddhas.
Prostrations to those rishis who possess the divine eye.
And to all the Bodhisattvas,
And also to the Shravakas.
Prostrations to bodhicitta,
Which repels the action of the lower realms,
Thoroughly demostrates the path of higher rebirth,
And leads to deathlessness and agelessness.
Whatever unwholesome deeds I committed,
Acting under the power of the mind,
I confess all these
In the presence of the Buddhas.
Through the accumulation of merit
Which I developed from the three sources,
Which are the seeds of my omniscience,
May my enlightenment never be exhausted.
I, too, rejoice in the merit of
Any offering made to the Buddhas
In the pure realms of the ten directions
And rejoiced by the Buddha's wisdom.
I confess all negative deeds
And rejoice in all meritorious deeds.
I prostrate to all the Buddhas.
May I achieve exalted primordial wisdom.
To the exalted enlightened Bodhisattvas,
Who abide on the tenth stage
Throughout the ten directions,
I request that they become fully enlightened.
Having attained the noble enlightenment of Buddhahood,
And conquered maras and their hosts,
May they turn the wheel of Dharma
For the benefit of every sentient being.
May the sound of the great drum of Dharma
End the suffering of sentient beings.
May they remain,
Teaching the holy Dharma for countless eons.
For those beings who are sunk in the quicksand of desire,
And tightly bound by the fetters of attachment,
And completely tied by every form of bondage,
May the Supreme Among Men gaze upon them.
Beings of stained mind
Are not scorned by the Buddhas,
Who possess the mind of compassion toward sentient beings,
May you liberate beings from the ocean of existence.
May I follow those fully enlightened beings who abide in the present,
Those who have existed in the past,
And those who are yet to appear,
And perform enlightened conduct.
Having accomplished the six perfections,
May I liberate all sentient beings of the six realms.
And by actualizing the six types of clairvoyance,
May I place them in unsurpassable enlightenment.
May I realize the Dharma of emptiness
Which was unborn and will not arise,
Has no nature and no place,
No consciousness and no substance.
Like the great sage, the Buddha,
May I realized the Dharma of selflessness,
The non-existence of beings and the non-existence of their life,
The non-existence of persons and the non-existence of things.
May I be able to give unstintingly
For the benefit of every sentient being,
Without ego or clinging
Toward any material thing.
May I acquire all my wealth spontaneously
Through realizing the non-material view of all matter,
And may I accomplish the perfection of giving
Through which clinging to material vanishes.
May I accomplish the perfection of morality
Through ethics lacking pride,
And by possessing pure moral conduct
Without lapses in ethical rules.
May I accomplish the perfection of patience
Which harbors no anger,
And is non-abiding, like the elements of air,
Earth, water, and fire.
May I accomplish the perfection of diligence
Through possessing strength of body and mind
By exerting diligence,
Stable, blissful, and without laziness.
May I accomplish the perfection of concentration
Through illusion-like concentration,
Through heroic traveler-like concentration,
And through diamond-like concentration.
May I accomplish the perfection of wisdom
Through actualizing the three types,
And equalizing the three times,
And the three doors of liberation.
May I accomplish my aspiration
Through a Bodhisattva's diligence,
Which blazes with dignity and light
And is praised by all the Buddhas.
Performing this conduct,
Becoming renowned for kindness,
And accomplishing the six types of paramitas,
May I thoroughly abide on the peak of the tenth bhumi.
Soon after departing this life
And having been born into the realm of joy,
With blissful mind may I swiftly please the Lord Maitreya Bodhisattva,
And may I obtain a prophecy to enlightenment.

[Though] space permeates everything,
it is never polluted, due to its subtlety.
Likewise the [Dharmadhatu]* in all beings
does not suffer the slightest pollution.
