Another verse (Caitanya Caritamrta, Madhya, 8.152) gives more information:

In other words, these are all potencies of God -- internal, external and marginal. But the internal potency is the Lord's personal energy and stands over the other two.

The more intensely you analyze yourself the more you will understand the conditions of your own mind, and you will be able to eliminate the subtler cravings.

Give up your desires for worldly enjoyments, your hankering for name and fame, and fully resign yourself to the Lord. It is quite impossible to enjoy worldly pleasures and at the same time realise God. Decide now what life you want to lead. Should it be this fleeting life of transient pleasures or the everlasting life of eternal bliss ?

Depend upon God and stand on your own feet. Remember the words of Upanishads and dive deep into spiritual practice, never be contented until the goal is reached.

One may very well do one's work in a perfectly resigned way, surrendering oneself wholly and unconditionally to the Divine. Then there comes a time when all work becomes worship. And work again becomes worship when we are in that prayerful mood of self-surrender. It is' possible to combine both, activity and self-surrender, doing what we have got to do in perfect self-forgetfulness.

Nothing is as mischievous as the mind. It raises so many doubts and disbeliefs! As one repeats the name of God, the desire for honour and fame departs and the mind becomes pure.

We must meditate to attain deep faith. After we have received the first contact of God, we should then seek to develop the contact into a greater and greater consciousness. That is what Jesus asked everyone to do. He wanted them to receive his omnipresent consciousness. And that is what Paramahansaji teaches. He brings us God and all he asks is that we receive.

You may say, ‘I cannot see Him with these eyes of mine. I cannot hear Him with these ears. How then am I to perceive Him?’ You can never perceive Him in this way. To go to the Creator you must throw aside these instruments which take you directly to the created. You must go beyond your mind and senses; then meditation will come of itself. This is the only way to get the inner vision. These senses are made for the creation, not for the Creator.

Meditation is possible when you stay away from lust and greed. However, by the grace of God, if you have self-awareness then there is no fear. But it is not a small thing to have that awareness. One has to work laboriously.

Put thoughts to rest and don’t seek outwardly anymore.
When things come up, then give them your attention;
just trust what is functional in you at the moment,
and you have nothing to be concerned about.

Without heart, everything else counts for nought. Unless the heart expands, nothing else will avail. Merely to continue sitting with the eyes shut will produce no fruit, it will not bring about God-realization. One's heart must feel for others; one must identify oneself with the happiness and sorrows of others, then only will God be realized.

The mind rebels against effort. It always seeks ease and comfort, but if you wish to attain anything you must force it to struggle. That is the only way to make your mind steady. … Regular war must be waged against the mind. To force the mind to obey
you is the ideal of spiritual discipline.

There is no miserable place waiting for you, no hell realm, sitting and waiting like Alaska – waiting to turn you into ice cream. But whatever you call it – hell or the suffering realms – it is something that you enter by creating a world of neurotic fantasy and believing it to be real. It sounds simple, but that’s exactly what happens."

You are the Buddha. You are the Truth. Then why do you not feel it? Why don't you know it through and through? Because there is a veil in the way, which is attachment to appearances. Such as the belief that you are not Buddha, that you are a separate individual, an ego. If you cannot remove this veil all at once, then it must be dissolved gradually.

The Buddha said that we should
completely subdue our minds.
Whatever we do, for good or ill, it
is our mind that is the true agent. In
the very depths of our being, we all
desire one thing: we want to be
happy. We don't want to suffer. But
because of this - this wanting - the
three defilements of craving,
aversion, and ignorance arise, and
suffering is what we get. It is
because of these defilements that
we accumulate actions that prevent
us from escaping from Samsara.

So it is important right from the
start to see the difference between
a good motivation and an evil one.
Our own mindfulness should be our
teacher. We must examine what is
positive and what is negative with
mindfulness. If positive thoughts
arise, we should go along with
them. If nonvirtuous thoughts arise,
we should put a stop to them. A
virtuous mind is the source of
happiness. An unvirtuous mind is
the source of pain.
