In his poem, “God's Boatman,” Yogananda said,

"Oh! I will come again and again!
Crossing a million crags of suffering,
With bleeding feet, I will come-
If need be, a trillion times—
As long as I know
One stray brother is left behind."

Choose which habits you are going to destroy in the New Year. Make up your mind about them and stick to your decision. Resolve to give more time to God: to meditate regularly every day, and on one night each week to meditate several hours, so that you can feel your spiritual progress in God. Resolve that you are going to practise Kriya Yoga regularly and that you are going to control your appetites and emotions. Be a master!

For the New Year my greatest wish and prayer for you is that you cast aside wrong habits of thinking and doing. Don't drag your bad habits into the New Year. You don't have to carry them with you. Any minute you may have to drop your mortal package, and those habits will vanish. They don't belong to you now. Don't admit them! Leave behind all useless thoughts and past sorrows and bad habits. Start life anew!

With the opening of the New Year, all the closed portals of limitations will be thrown open and I shall move through them to vaster fields, where my worthwhile dreams of life will be fulfiled.

You are your own enemy and you don't know it. You don't learn to sit quietly. You don't learn to give time to God. And you are impatient and expect to attain heaven all at once. You cannot get it by reading books or by listening to sermons or by doing charitable works. You can get it only by giving your time to Him in deep meditation.

Let us forget the sorrows of the past and make up our minds not to dwell on them in the New Year. With determination and unflinching will, let us renew our lives, our good habits, and our successes. If the last year has been hopelessly bad, the New Year must be hopefully good.

O Father, when I was blind I found not a door that led to Thee. Thou hast healed my eyes; now I discover doors everywhere: the hearts of flowers, the voices of friendship, memories of lovely experiences. Each gust of my prayer opens a new entrance to the vast temple of Thy presence.

CHRIST IN INDIA~~UNITY OF KRIYA YOGA AND CHRISTIANITY

[India’s] tradition of producing wise and holy persons explains why many deep seekers of God have been drawn to India. It is said that Jesus himself went there, during part of the “unknown years” of which nothing is said in the Bible. In 1959 I discussed this with one of India’s great spiritual leaders, Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha, the Shankaracharya of Puri. I told him that Guruji had often said to us that Christ spent some of his life in India, in association with her illumined sages. His Holiness replied, “That is true. I have studied ancient records in the Puri Jagannath Temple confirming those facts. He was known as ‘Isha,’ and during part of his time in India he stayed in the Jagannath Temple. When he returned to his part of the world, he expounded the teachings that are known today as Christianity.”

In fact, the present to the world the underlying unity of Christ’s teachings with the ancient science of yoga as taught by Krishna is an important aspect of the task given to Paramahansaji by Mahavatar Babaji. Guruji told us that the essence of Christ’s teaching—“Love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength”—is the yoga principle we just referred to in relation to Yoga, the science of God-communion that was the apex of India’s ancient achievement. It was Guruji who was chosen by his guru and paramgurus to introduce this practical science on a worldwide scale.

The devotee is a Divine lark, immersed in the spirit of his song; he has no thought about personal gain or impressing others with his singing. The actions of the devotee are for the Infinite alone, not to please mankind nor to satisfy his own material desires.

Always in the background of your mind hum a silent devotional song of love to your beloved Heavenly Father, remembering that all your abilities are gifts from Him.

We put forth our hands to receive God's gifts of life and sun and food and all the other things He bestows on us; but even as we receive them, we are unmindful of the Giver. If you have lovingly given presents to someone and then find out that he never thinks of you, how hurt you would feel! God feels that way, too.

In one of His aspects, a very touching aspect, the Lord may be said to be a beggar. He yearns for our attention. The Master of the Universe, at whose glance all stars, suns, moons, and planets quiver, is running after man and saying: "Won't you give Me your affection? Don't you love Me, the Giver, more than the things I have made for you? Won't you seek Me?" But man says: "I am too busy now; I have work to do. I can't take time to look for You." And the Lord says: "I will wait."

Our dear ones promise to love us forever; yet when they sink into the Great Sleep, their earth memories forsaken, what value their vows? Who, without telling us in words, loves us everlastingly? Who remembers us when all others forget us? Who will still be with us when we must leave the friends of this world? God alone.

The Lord is found through unceasing devotion. When you want only the Giver, and not His gifts, then He will come to you.

It is when you persistently, selflessly, perform every action with love-inspired thoughts of God that He will come to you. Then you realize that you are the Ocean of Life, which has become the tiny wave of each life. This is the way of knowing the Lord through activity. When in every action you think of Him before you act, while you are performing the action, and after you have finished it, He will reveal Himself to you. You must work, but let God work through you; this is the best part of devotion. If you are constantly thinking that He is walking through your feet, working through your hands, accomplishing through your will, you will know Him.

Love Him, talk to Him every second of your life, in activity and in silence, with deep prayer, with the unceasing desire of your heart; and you shall see the screen of delusion melt away. He who is playing hide-and-seek in the beauty of flowers, in souls, in noble passions, in dreams, shall come forth and say: "You and I have been apart for a long time, because I desired that you give Me your love willingly. You are made in My image, and I wanted to see if you would use your freedom to give Me your love."

29th November, 1935. Talk 107

Later the Yogi (Swami Yogananda) asked: How is the spiritual uplift of the people to be effected? What are the instructions to be given them?

M.: They differ according to the temperaments of the individuals and according to the spiritual ripeness of their minds. There cannot be any instruction en masse.

D.: Why does God permit suffering in the world? Should He not with His omnipotence do away with it at one stroke and ordain the universal realisation of God?

M.: Suffering is the way for Realisation of God.

D.: Should He not ordain differently?

M.: It is the way.

D.: Are Yoga, religion, etc., antidotes to suffering?

M.: They help you to overcome suffering.

D.: Why should there be suffering?

M.: Who suffers? What is suffering?

(No answer)

Finally the Yogi rose up, prayed for Sri Bhagavan' s blessings for his own work and expressed great regret for his hasty return. He looked very sincere and devoted and even emotional.

Remember, in your will is the will of God. In your heart you must love nothing more than God, who is a "jealous" God. If you want Him, you must have the will to cast away from your heart every desire but the desire for Him.

Belief and experience are quite different. A belief comes from what you have heard or read and accepted as fact, but experience is something you have actually perceived. The convictions of those who have experienced God cannot be shaken.

Everything is God. This very room and the universe are floating like a motion picture on the screen of my consciousness. I look at this room and see nothing but pure Spirit, pure Light, pure Joy. The pictures of my body and your bodies -- all objects in this world are only rays of light streaming out of that one sacred Light. As I see that Light I behold nothing anywhere but pure Spirit.

You think you must have this or that and then you can be happy. But no matter how many of your desires are satisfied, you never will find happiness through them. The more you have, the more you want. Learn to live simply. Lord Krishna said: "His mind is full with contentment whose desires ever flow inward. That man is like a changeless ocean which is kept brimful with constantly entering waters. He is not a muni who bores holes of desires in his reservoir of peace and lets the waters escape."
