Know that the eradication of the identification with the body is charity, spiritual austerity and ritual sacrifice; it is virtue, divine union and devotion; it is heaven, wealth, peace and truth; it is grace; it is the state of divine silence; it is the deathless death; it is jnana, renunciation, final liberation and bliss.

Who is it that loves and who is it that suffers?
He alone stages a play with Himself.
The individual suffers because he perceives duality.
Find the One everywhere and in everything
and there will be an end to pain and suffering.

God is the one great Reality. To know and experience Him is the whole purpose of human existence. So do not hesitate to strive to achieve this great goal. Be patience in all the ups and downs of life. Everything will right itself. Do all that is necessary to be done, but do not be anxious. Do your best and leave the rest to God.

There’s only one way to become liberated, and that is to awaken, just to awaken, just wake up, just as you do in the morning when you wake up from sleep. You were in a dream world and you woke up. In the same way you awaken to your Self. The way to do this is to be at satsang, to surrender to the Self. When you surrender to the Self you’re surrendering to life. You’re no longer thinking “This has to work out this way. This has to work out that way. This has to be improved. I’ve got to read this book. I’ve got to go see this teacher.” True surrender is allowing your heart, your spiritual heart, to take over and you have nothing to do and nothing to say. All of the practices are incidental. Sadhana is important to make you come to the realization that you have to wake up. That’s all sadhana is for. It’s for no other reason. Sadhana, spiritual practices, do not wake you up by themselves. They have no awakening powers. But they put your mind to rest. When your mind is at rest you awaken.

The talk turned to various recipes suggested by various people about kaya kalpa [a medicinal preparation for longevity]. Bhagavan [Sri Ramana Maharshi] mentioned a few kalpas based on camphor, a hundred year old neem tree, etc., and said, "Who would care to take such trouble over this body? As explained in books, the greatest malady we have is the body, the disease of birth, and if one takes medicines to strengthen it and prolong its life, it is like a man taking medicine to strengthen and perpetuate his disease. As the body is a burden we bear, we should on the other hand feel like the coolie engaged to carry a load, anxiously looking forward to arrival at the destination when he can throw off his burden."

Man is led into the wrong belief that the accumulation of material possessions will endow him with joy and calm. But Divine Love (Prema) alone can give that everlasting joy. Prema alone will remove anger and envy and hatred.

The one who follows the thought is also a thought! The one who follows the thought IS in thought. When you know that both are thoughts, you are home. You are not in Home, you ARE Home. Then allow thoughts to arise and allow them to be followed. You remain as That unmoved and unconcerned Being. This is the highest understanding.

There is no process to become silent. To disturb your mind you need process, but to stay silent there is no process. Stay in satsang, stay quiet, always have love with your own Self. You are not to win it by any attempt or effort. Simply stay quiet. If any thought rises, simply find out where it came from.

If you know you are bound you are no longer bound because by knowing the bondage you separate yourself from it, you objectify it. With this release, the 'I' that was bound pours into Consciousness like a river pours into the ocean.

'One part of you is occupied by all your incompletions, patterns, with useless struggles, the other part is available as a complete space, free space, free energy for you to handle life spontaneously, continuously. Whenever you handle, you look at the life from that free space, you find more and more solution. When you look at life from that patterned space, you find more and more complication. That is why, whatever may be others’ problem, huge like mountain, you will give a solution just like that, because you are looking at that problem from the free inner space, not from the patterned space

D.: How to root out sexual impulse?
M.: By rooting out the false idea of the body being Self. There is no sex in the Self.

D.: How to realize it?
M.: Because you think you are the body, you see another as the body.

Difference in sex arises. But you are not the body. Be the real Self. Then there is no sex.

Allowing The Diminishment of the Ego
Excerpt from A New Earth

The ego is always on guard against any kind of perceived diminishment. Automatic ego-repair mechanisms come into effect to restore the mental form of “me.” When someone blames or criticizes me, that ego is a diminishment of self, and it will immediately attempt to repair its diminished sense of self through self-justification, defense, or blaming. Whether the other person is right or wrong is irrelevant to the ego. It is much more interested in self-preservation than in the truth. This is the preservation of the psychological form of “me.” Even such a normal thing as shouting something back when another driver calls you “idiot” is an automatic and unconscious ego-repair mechanism. One of the most common ego-repair mechanisms is anger, which causes temporary but huge ego inflation. All repair mechanisms make perfect sense to the ego but are actually dysfunctional. Those that are most extreme in their dysfunction are physical violence and self-delusion in the form of grandiose fantasies.

A powerful spiritual practice is consciously to allow the diminishment of ego when it happens without attempting to restore it. I recommend that you experiment with this from time to time. For example, when someone criticizes you, blames you, or calls you names, instead of immediately retaliating or defending yourself – do nothing. Allow the self-image to remain diminished and become alert to what that feels like deep inside you. For a few seconds, it may feel uncomfortable, as if you had shrunk in size. Then you may feel an inner spaciousness that feels intensely alive. You haven’t diminished at all. In fact, you have expanded. You may then come to an amazing realization: When you are seemingly diminished in some way and remain in absolute non-reaction, not just externally but also internally, you realize that nothing real has been diminished, that through becoming “less,” you become more. When you no longer defend or attempt to strengthen the form of yourself, you step out of identification with form, with mental self-image. Through becoming less (in the ego’s perception), you in fact undergo an expansion and make room for Being to come forward. True power, who you are beyond form, can shine through the apparent weakened form. This is what Jesus means when he says “Deny yourself” or “Turn the other cheek.”

Visitor: Why is there such a divergence between different gurus, rishis, and realized yogis? Perhaps they are not realized?

Nisargadatta Maharaj: No, this is to be explained as follows. Although consciousness is universal and the knowledge "you are," and whatever knowledge there is, is all common, its expression through the body and the mind is individualistic; there everything is different. Therefore, the path expounded by each sage will be different; it is bound to be so.

The Self, the Knower, the Lord of all, the Real Being, is the cause of all the vision that is in the universe, but it is impossible for Him to see Himself or know Himself, excepting through reflection. You cannot see your own face except in a mirror, and so the Self cannot see Its own nature until It is reflected, and this whole universe therefore is the Self trying to realise Itself.

Consider the Self as pure intelligence bereft of objective knowledge.

What is known is not different from that intelligence, it is like a series of images reflected in a mirror. Absolute consciousness is the universe; it is `I', it is all, sentient and insentient, mobile and immobile. Everything else is illuminated by it whereas it is alone and Self-luminous. Therefore let those sensible people who are desirous of chit (pure intelligence) turn away from illusory knowledge and contemplate their own Self -- the absolute consciousness -- which illumines all the rest, and which is their being too.

The dreams are not equal, but the dreamer is one. I am the insect, I am the poet - in dream. But in reality I am neither. I am beyond all dreams. I am the light in which all dreams appear and disappear. I am both inside and outside the dream. Just as a man having a headache knows the ache and also knows that he is not the ache, so do I know the dream, myself dreaming and myself not dreaming - all at the same time. I am what I am before, during and after the dream. But what I see in dream, I am not.
