The true Guru cannot be left. He is the Guru by his nature and he naturally fulfills all that is lacking in the disciple.

As the flower gives its fragrance naturally, so the Guru gives diksha — by sight or hearing or touch or teaching or mantra or even without any of these, just because he is the Guru.

The flower does not make an effort to give its fragrance, it does not say: 'Come and smell me'. It is there. Whoever comes near it will enjoy the scent.

As ripe fruit falls from the tree and is picked up by man or eaten by the birds, so the

Guru is all that is needed for those who are his own, whoever they may be.

Mother: You don't know who you are, you think of yourselves as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, but really, I am telling you the truth, there is only the ONE.
If you read the Vishnu Purana, it is said that Vishnu is the Greatest of all, the same is said of Shiva in the Shiva Purana.

How can that be? Or if it is so, then as there can be only one greatest, Vishnu and Shiva must be the same. There must be Vishnu in Shiva and Shiva in Vishnu. They are different functions. If you see only the One, there is no question of Shiva, Vishnu, Buddha, Jesus, etc. But as long as there are two ‘duniya’, then there is 'dukkha' [suffering], 'dwandwa', opposition, and all the rest.

The world implies movement and thus death because its nature is to change constantly. But if you find your true Self, the transcendent ONE, then all remains unchanging despite outer appearances.

Where the one becomes two, there is the play of Shiva and his Shakti, Krishna, and Radha. This is necessary to produce the 'Leela', the 'play' of life, the world, the many. The Prakriti [the ever-changing outer world of form and matter —the feminine principle is ever attracted to the Purusha [the sole, unchanging unmanifest male principle] and vice-versa. So it is also in marriage, which is meant to be for the sake of helping one another to realize the highest. One's wife is ones 'swadharmini' [life partner], not as it is nowadays.

One must not allow oneself to be caught by the lure of supernormal faculties. Suppose one has acquired the power that whatever one utters becomes true or whatever one desires is fulfilled. What of it? This is only a stage.

By using such powers to destroy or improve people one may become arrested on that level instead of progressing towards the ultimate. To get entangled on the level of these powers is a waste of energy. Having acquired them one must not lose sight of the supreme Goal of human existence but strive unceasingly after Self-realization.
Failing to do so will create obstacles and may result in a fall.

You attempt to appease want by want; hence want does not disappear and neither does the sense of want.
When man awakens to the acute consciousness of this sense of want, then only does spiritual inquiry become genuine. You must bear in mind that only when the sense of want becomes the sense of the want of Self-knowledge does the real Quest begin.

WORKING FOR IMMORTALITY
A Discussion with Ma

An American woman, Markell Brooks had been only for twelve days in India when she asked Anandamayi Ma:

Question: Since the will of the individual is illusory and one does not know God's will, how can one lead a purposeful life in this world.

Ma: By contemplating the Self, one will find out. It is man's principal duty to aspire to Self-realization.

Question: What about self-expression in art?

Ma: This also belongs to that which is fleeting. You paint a picture, but it can't last. The most beautiful song fades away in a moment.

Question: Presuming that the striving goes on no matter what, how can one know how to live — in relation both to human beings and one's own creative energies?

Ma: A man who is after worldly things and is occupied with the business of this world gets satisfaction out of what he does, for otherwise why should he do it? He feels he is doing well, he gets praise and fame, money and position and his mind is always occupied with his affairs. If someone is opposed to him and puts obstacles in his way, he gets angry and hostile.

A person who strives after Self-realization will turn to Mahatmas [great souls] for advice, guidance, and company. He will start reading books written by such men. He will admire them and wish to become like them and so, since he is searching for Truth, he will come to be truthful in behavior and speech. The Self is one, so remember the Oneness of all.

Although a dog may bite you, you will not bite back. The man who strives after worldly goods and satisfaction is working for death because everything in the world is constantly dying and something else is born. The child dies to the young girl and the girl to the woman etc. But the man who is after Self-realization is working for immortality. When living and working in the world one's creative power is exhausted in the pursuit of sense objects so one may come to feel weak, tired or ill.

But by striving after Self-realization one's creative power is preserved and strengthened.
While the person who lives in the world takes pleasure in parties, meeting people etc, the one who is out for Self-realization will take pleasure in meditation, singing the praises of God, reading books of wisdom, listening to discourses by great souls and mixing with those who are pilgrims on the path.

Yesterday some foreigners asked Mataji questions.

Q: How can I get Self-Realization?

Anandamayi Ma: The Self is Swayam Prakash (self-illumined), so you need not do anything.

Q: But have we not to make an effort towards it?

Ma: Yes, there is a veil over the Self and you can remove it by your effort.

Q: What is the process towards this?

Ma: Do you really want it? Then will you do without questioning what I tell you?

Q: (hesitating) I came to India for this purpose and I regard Ramana Maharshi as my guru.

Ma: Then you must do exactly as He tells you. If you want Self-Realization and nothing else, you shall find a way. There is no doubt about it.

This is really the point and justifies what J.Krishnamurti said: “ If one is in dead earnest, this very seriousness becomes the guru.”

But who is in dead earnest?
