1. O Lord of all celestial beings! I yearn to know that path
of supreme wisdom and the code of conduct by adopting which
one can get liberation, so that all humanity may attain salvation.
I request you to enlighten me on them, out of your grace.

Ishwara :

2. O Queen among women! So that everyone may attain
knowledge, I shall clearly explain to you today the highest
knowledge and the discipline to be followed by which
discerning seekers will attain liberation, which is free from
any blemish and is difficult to describe.

3. O Lady with fair countenance! Understand that one
who is not able to realise the Truth in his Heart by this
knowledge of spiritual wisdom known as Kala Jnana, can
never attain it even by studying countless crores of sastras [?]
(scriptures) spread out like the sky.

4. Therefore cast aside all fears (on following this path)
and shed all doubts. Giving up attachment or desire for
anything, be ardent in seeking the ultimate knowledge with
wholehearted devotion and with a clear mind (without any
trace of confusion).

Devikalottara

(Introduction by Sri Bhagavan)

This work is one of the upa-agamas and explains the
supreme wisdom to be attained by mature souls and their mode
of life, expounded by the Supreme Lord Siva to Devi Parvati.
It is the essence of all Agama Sastras on matters of spiritual
knowledge. This is verily the boat which can rescue the mortals
struggling hard, sinking and rising, in the sorrowful ocean of
samsara of endless cycles of births and deaths and take them
by the direct path to the shore of liberation. Let all earnest
seekers after Truth, instead of groping in the dark, bewildered,
and losing their way, adopt the help of this straight path and
reach the supreme state to bliss and peace.

Invocation

Meditate in the Heart upon Lord Ganesa -- the silent,
non-dual, universal witness -- who is the nectar of divine
bliss and is full of grace, shining as the bountiful flowering of
aspirants following the path of spiritual wisdom revealed in
Devikalottara, which was expounded by Lord Ishwara into
the ears of Goddess Ishwari.

Note: In the original Tamil verse, the word `kari' means
`elephant', which denotes Lord Ganesa as per tradition, but
the word `kari' also means `witness', which denotes the
Universal Self, which is in line with Advaitic experience.

5. Claiming nothing as `mine', filled with compassion,
giving protection to all living beings so that no creature fears
you, yearning for liberation, absorbed in yoga (union of jiva [?]
and Para, fusion of individual self with the universal Self),
study this work Devikalottara and follow wholeheartedly and
steadfastly the single path shown therein.

Let go of what has passed,
Let go of what may come,
Let go of what is happening now,
Don't try to figure anything out,
Don't try to make anything happen,
Relax, right now, and rest.

Question: You say all moments are contained in the one supreme moment. I cannot understand this.

Sri Anandamayi Ma: In reality there is nothing but the one moment all along. Just as one single tree contains numberless trees, innumerable leaves, infinite movement, and untold static states, so does one moment contain an infinite number of moments, and within all these countless moments lies the one single moment. Look, there is motion as well as rest in that supreme moment. Why then should the revelation of the moment be spoken of? Because, misled by your perception of differences, you think of yourself and of each and every creature or object in the world as being apart from one another. This is why, for you, separateness exists.

58. I am not the gross body, nor am I the subtle body. I
am also not the causal body. I am the kinsman of the universe.
I am the One who is of the nature of transcendental knowledge.
I am moreover the eternal One, the Lord, the taintless One,
the One who is devoid of the states (of waking, dream and
sleep), the One who is devoid of the universe.

Questioner: You are asking me to give up the world, while I want to be happy in the world.

Nisargadatta Maharaj: If you ask for the impossible, who can help you? The limited is bound to be painful and pleasant in turns. If you seek real happiness, unassailable and unchangeable, you must leave the world with its pains and pleasures behind you.

Questioner: How is it done?

Nisargadatta Maharaj: Mere physical renunciation is only a token of earnestness, but earnestness alone does not liberate. There must be understanding which comes with alert perceptivity, eager enquiry and deep investigation. You must work relentlessly for your salvation from sin and sorrow.

Questioner: What is sin?

Nisargadatta Maharaj: All that binds you.

You may associate holy men and study scriptures; but unless you practice spiritual disciplines, nothing will avail. One has to undergo long hardship for that. It requires quite a lot of self-control, and intense spiritual struggle.

Divine happiness, even the tiniest particle of a grain of it, never leaves one again; and when one attains to the essence of things and finds one’s Self–this is supreme happiness. When it is found, nothing else remains to be found; the sense of want will not awaken anymore, and the heart’s torment will be stilled forever. Do not be satisfied with fragmentary happiness, which is invariably interrupted by shocks and blows of fate; but become complete, and having attained to perfection, be YOURSELF.

He simply renounces imagining things.

Focus attention on the feeling inside you.
Stay present and continue to be the observer
of what is happening inside you.
Become aware, not only of the emotional pain,
but also of, 'the One who observes, the Silent Watcher.'
This is the power of the now;
the power of conscious presence.
Then See what happens.

He plays in every atom; He is playing when He is building up earths, and suns, and moons; He is playing with the human heart, with animals, with plants. And, oh, bliss! we are His playmates!

If you are suffering, I am suffering, though I am not aware of it. How can I live without suffering? If my foot is suffering, definitely my whole being is suffering. We are all limbs of one huge, one great prajapati (being)—the whole universe. How can we live happily? Let us learn not to hoard, but just to give. To whom? Not to strangers. I’m not telling you something impractical. Give to those with whom you live.

I once went for a walk near the housing board buildings. There was a sewage trench on one side of the building. I could smell the stench of sewage even though I was a long way away. I stayed away from it because I didn't want to be nauseated by the bad smell.

In circumstances such as these you don't say "All is one. Everything is the Self." and paddle through the sewage. The knowledge 'everything is the Self' may be there, but that doesn't mean that you have to put yourself in dangerous or health-threatening places.

When you become one with the Self, a great power takes over you and runs your life for you. It looks after your body; it puts you in the right place at the right time; it makes you say right things to people you meet. This power takes you over so completely, you no longer have any ability to decide or discriminate. The ego that thinks, 'I must do this,' or ' I should not do that' is no longer there. The Self simply animates you and makes you do all the things that need to be done.
If you are not in this state, then use your discrimination wisely. You can choose to sit in a flower garden and enjoy the scent of blooms, or you can go down to that trench I told you about and make yourself sick by inhaling the fumes there.

So, while you still have an ego, and the power of discrimination that goes with it, use it to inhale the fragrance that you find in the presence of an enlightened being, If you spend time and proximity of a jnani, his peace will sink into you to such an extent that you will find yourself in a state of peace. If, instead you choose to spend all you time with people whose minds are always full of bad thoughts, their mental energy and vibrations will start to seep into you.

I tell you regularly, 'You are the Self. Everything is the Self.' If this is not your experience, pretending that 'all is one' this may get you into trouble. Advaita may be the ultimate experience, but it is not something that a mind that still sees distinctions can practice.
Electricity is a useful form of energy, but it is also potentially harmful. Use it wisely. Don't put your finger in the socket, thinking 'all is one.' You need a body that is in good working order in order to realise the Self. Realising the Self is the only useful and worthy activity in this life, so keep the body in good repair till that goal is achieved. Afterwards, the Self will take care of everything and you won't have to worry about anything any more. In fact, you won't be able to because the mind that previously did the worrying, the choosing and discriminating will no longer be there. In that state you won't need it and you won't miss it.

The mind desires this,
And grieves for that.
It embraces one thing,
And spurns another.
Now it feels anger,
Now happiness.

In this way you are bound.

But when the mind desires nothing
And grieves for nothing,
When it is without joy or anger
And, grasping nothing,
Turns nothing away...

Then you are free.

There is no miserable place waiting for you, no hell realm, sitting and waiting like Alaska – waiting to turn you into ice cream. What Brahman is cannot he described. All things in the world - the Vedas, the Puranas, the Tantras, the six systems of philosophy - have been defiled, like food that has been touched by the tongue, for they have been read or uttered by the tongue. Only one thing has not been defiled in this way, and that is Brahman. No one has ever been able to say what Brahman is.

A man had two sons. The father sent them to a preceptor to learn the Knowledge of Brahman. After a few years they returned from their preceptor's house and bowed low before their father. Wanting to measure the depth of their knowledge of Brahman, he first questioned the older of the two boys. 'My child,' he said, 'You have studied all the scriptures. Now tell me, what is the nature of Brahman?' The boy began to explain Brahman by reciting various texts from the Vedas. The father did not say anything. Then he asked the younger son the same question. But the boy remained silent and stood with eyes cast down. No word escaped his lips. The father was pleased and said to him: 'My child, you have understood a little of Brahman. What It is cannot be expressed in words.'
