The variety of this world can only be manifested if the Highest Lord, Who is essentially the pure light of consciousness, exists; just as a surface is necessary for a picture.

Other achievements are in vain if one has missed the supreme reality, the Self. But once one has attained this reality there is nothing left that one could desire.

The truth is therefore this: the Supreme Lord manifests freely all the varied play of emissions and absorptions in the sky of his own nature.

**

The Light is the supreme reality that encompasses all the categories from Earth to Paramasiva, while the unfolding of the reflective awareness of the Heart of I consciousness within it, distinguishes between them.

**

Absolute consciousness is manifest here in every circumstance of daily life because it is everywhere full and perfect. Consciousness is said to be the cause of all things because it is everywhere emergent as each manifest
entity.

**

The extremely pure conscious reality transcends all talk of succession and its absence.

**

Immersing himself in the supreme reality, clearly aware that consciousness is all things, the yogi’s consciousness vibrates. This vibration is the Great Permeation.

**

The yogi should abide firmly fixed in his own nature by the power of the exertion of his expanding consciousness. Thus he is established on the plane of Bliss relishing the objects of sense that spontaneously appear before him. Perfected yogis (siddha) , are ever steadfast in this, the Supreme Gesture (mudra), the perfect and unobstructed expansion of the awakened.

**

The couple (yamala) is consciousness itself; the unifying emission and the stable abode. It is the absolute, the noble cosmic bliss consisting of both (Siva and Sakti). It is the supreme secret of Kula (the ultimate reality); neither quiescent or emergent, it is the flowing fount of both quiescence and emergence.

**

The variety of this world can only be manifested if the Highest Lord, Who is essentially the pure light of consciousness, exists; just as a surface is necessary for a picture.

**

' Paramarthasara '

'Just as the vast expanse of sky is not defiled by clouds nor smoke nor dust, so the supreme Being is not affected by the changes of maya.'

Yogaraja's commentary:
Just as the surface of the sky is intrinsically pure and is not defiled by clouds, smoke, or dust floating on the horizon, and just as the Self also remains undefiled under all different situations, so the Self never loses its essence in different situations and conditions like the birth and death of limited subjects which are emanated from ignorance caused by the changes in maya.
The supreme Being is both the source of the emanation and the resting place of all living beings, That he always manifests himself as all limited beings is pointed out by using the word “supreme”. Hence the lord is like a magician untouched by the exercise of his magical powers who is unblemished by the modifications of self-born maya. This has been stated by my great grand teacher, Utpaladeva, in his work Ajada-pramatr-siddhi:
Although the manifestation of the ultimate Being is restricted in limited beings by the vital breath and the physical body, it remains unaffected in the supreme Being. The vital breath is also his form; then how can he be affected by it?

This bliss does not resemble the intoxication brought about by wine nor is it like the happiness caused by wealth and it can not even be compared with the happiness that arises by uniting with the beloved one. The appearance of this light of consciousness cannot be compared with the light of a lamp, neither with the light of the moon or the sun. The state of bliss that arises when you are freed of the accumulated experiences of separation, is like the relief you experience by putting aside a heavy load. The appearance of this light is like the discovery of a treasure once lost, the realm of universal non-duality.

To Him who pervades the consciousness of all moving and non-moving beings, which is divine, only one, endless and primeval, which is Lord

Bhairava, who is the refuge for the helpless, to Him who is in my mind with all my heart I offer my salutations.

Oh Mahesh! With the grace of thy blessing this whole universe is nothing more than your manifestation. Wherever I see You and my soul is completely full of You.

In this world You are the Lord of my soul, because of this in my life there is no fear of difficulties and pain, which are the result of this cycle of birth and death.

Oh Antaka, Lord of Death! Do not cast your awful look on me. Oh Brave who always thinks of serving the Lord Shankara. Oh mighty Bhairava, Lord of creation, sustenance and destruction, give me the strength.

Oh Lord of the worlds! Salutations to You. I melt in the rays coming from the splendor of Your Light, which dissipate the darkness of ignorance and the fear of ghosts of the Lord of Death.

Oh ray of light of eternal truth, universal consciousness of the world, who has a nature full of Divine nectar. My soul filled with ecstasy salutes You.

Oh Lord you're attainable by the mind through meditation, You are a shower of nectar of unity that restores my body in a State of suffering.

Oh Shankara, it is true that penance, charity, bathing in sacred water and meditation break the pain cycle of birth and death, but the rain of nectar that flows from your divine story leads to salvation.

Oh Lord Bhairava! It is well known that You are easily accessible by devotees, but inaccessible to people with no devotion. My conscience, having realized your true nature, sings and dances in Ecstasy.

Abhinavagupta wrote this great prayer on the tenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Pausha, and with this hymn the Lord Bhairava, all pervading and full of compassion, destroys all the miseries of his devotees.

Thus ends the hymn of nine stanzas written by Abhinavagupta.

By focusing on the revelation of supreme Consciousness he unveils the inner Self. Thus great Shiva unfolds His prodigious game of bondage and liberation.

Abhinavagupta, Paramarthasara, Verse 33

Pratyabhijnahridayam Sutra 15 says:

Balalabhe vishvam atmasat karoti

By acquiring the inherent power of Chiti, the aspirant assimilates the universe to himself.
“The power of Chiti is endless expansion, endless abundance. That place exists within us. If we can touch it, 'We assimilate the universe to ourselves'. We live in union and ecstasy.
Meditate on the abundance of the power of Chiti, Consciousness within. Look for a place within where there is life-force, a vibration, an upliftment, an expansion. It may be hidden and faint within you, but search for it and locate that current, however slight, and be with it. See if you can coax it to become larger and stronger. Meditate for 21 minutes.”

“The God, whose nature is a free consciousness, whose characteristic is the supreme light, due to his own intrinsic nature and as a result of his enjoyment of the sport of concealing his own nature, becomes the atomic, finite self, of which there are many. He himself, as a result of his own freedom, binds himself here by means of actions whose nature are composed of imaginary differentiations. Such is the power of the God’s freedom that, even though he has become the finite self, he once more truly attains his own true form in all its purity.”

In You, the Supreme who transcends the abyss, You without beginning, the unique one who has penetrated the secret depths, You who rest in everything, You who are found in everything, both mobile and immobile, in You, Shambhu, I take refuge.

“The essence of consciousness is freedom, and the essence of that is a mass of bliss. It is for this reason that ritual action directed toward an attainment of a state of identity and absorption should be carried out employing elements that bring joy to the Heart.”

People, occupied as they are with their own affairs, normally do nothing for others. The activity of those in whom every stain of phenomenal existence has been destroyed and are identified with Bhairava, full of Him, is intended only for the benefit of the world.

“Just as an object appears directly to one whose eyes are open without the intervention of mental cogitation, so for some, does SHIVA’s nature.”

“The yogi should abide firmly fixed in his own nature by the power of expanding awareness … relishing the objects of sense that spontaneously appear before him.”

“The Power that resides in the Heart of Awareness is Freedom itself.”

“A Yogi can enter another person’s body without leaving his own. The Guru’s consciousness is activated in the disciple’s consciousness … thus initiation that bestows liberation is given.
So gracious is he that, by transferring his own nature to those whose awareness is pure, they become one with him at his gaze.”

“Listen: neither accepting nor rejecting anything but just sharing joyfully in everything, being as you are.”

Just as juice, jaggery and sugar are only different states of the same thing, namely sugarcane, so do all beings abide in the supreme Lord in different states or forms.

In the kindled light of the Self, stirred up by the wind of contemplation, the imaginations of the aspirant are sacrificed and he becomes one with that light.

The Supreme Lord seems still when the various elements are still, glad when they are glad, gloomy when they are gloomy, but truly he is not so.

When by virtue of the store of gems of supreme wisdom, collected in the treasure house of the mystic heart, the state of Maheshwara is reached; one realizes ‘I am in all. Hence, what misfortunes can befall, and by whom?’

Oneness is like the clear blue sky - everything arises, unfolds, and subsides within its all-compassionate love. Everything is an aspect of Oneness. And our quest to know this comes from Oneness.

“This bliss is not like the intoxication of wine or that of riches, nor similar to union with the beloved. The manifestation of the light of consciousness is not like the ray of light from a lamp, sun or moon. When one frees oneself from accumulated multiplicity, the state of bliss is like that of putting down a burden; the manifestation of the Light is like the acquiring of a lost treasure, the domain of universal non-duality.
