...From then on, I took ' Spurring Students through the Zen Barrier ' as my master. Rededicated to my practice, I began pushing myself mercilessly day and night. While reading the ' Three Teachings of the Buddha Patriarchs,' I came upon a passage that made me leap up with joy. It compared a student practicing the Great Vehicle to a log floating down a river: never touching at either bank, it finally makes its way out into the great ocean.

...He felt healthy enough later in the year to respond to requests for lectures from three nearby temples. At two of them, he gave several days of talks "on whatever moved his fancy." Again, the exertion exhausted him, but when one of his monks tried to suggest he should stop teaching, at least until he felt a little stronger, the reply was typical: " What's my fatigue, compared with the great hunger my students suffer? "

The account of Hakuin's final months is perhaps best taken directly from Torei's biography:

" In the eleventh month, the master returned to Shoin-ji. It was clear his condition was growing more serious.

On the sixth of the twelfth month, a freak storm swept the area, sending bolts of lightning crashing violently to earth. The next day, the physician Furugori came to examine the master's pulse.

"What do you think?" the master asked.

"Nothing out of the ordinary," he replied.

"Can someone be called a skilled physician when he can't even tell when a patient has only three more days to live?" the master chided.

Old Mr. Yamanashi was allowed to visit. A go board was brought out, but after two or three moves, the master was forced to stop.

On the tenth day, the master called his disciple Suio to his sickbed and entrusted him with his personal affairs after his death.

At daybreak the following day, the master was sleeping very peacefully, lying on his right side. He made a single loud groan, "UNNN," and then passed away.

The funeral was held on the fifteenth. A violent storm of wind and rain forced the cremation to be postponed until the following day. Afterwards, a great many relics were found among the ashes.

...They resembled precious blue gems - the true fruits of the master's life of meditation and wisdom. Crowds of people flocked to the cremation site, more than a few of them comporting themselves like the demons who thronged to the Buddha's cremation hoping to acquire relics from his remains. Because of this, the relics were divided into three lots and enshrined in stupas at the master's three temples.

"Don't misdirect your effort by chasing around looking for something outside yourself. All you have to do is to concentrate on being thoughtless and doing nothing whatever. No practice. No realization. Doing nothing, the state of no-mind, is the direct path to sudden realization. No practice, no realization, is the true principle--things as they really are. The enlightened Buddhas of the ten directions have called this supreme, unparalleled, right awakening."

Truly, is anything missing now?
Nirvana is right here, before our eyes;
this very place is the Lotus Land;
this very body, the Buddha.

If you wish to find the Buddha,
first you must look into your own mind,
outside of the mind,there is no Buddha
