A man with no thoughts in the mind is emitting rays of peace and love! Everyone is attracted to the person who has no concept in the mind.

Just keep quiet and see what happens. All nature will love you. You will be better taken care of than by your own mother who gave birth to you and put you in all this trouble.

But this other mother -- consciousness, if you know that she is your original mother -- she will take care of you and give you peace and happiness and deathlessness also. No other mother can give you this. Deathlessness in eternity. This mother we do not recognize, and we get into trouble.

When you love, you love all beings. When you eat, everybody is eating off your plate, even the beings who have died, and the ones who are yet to be. When you see, all the eyes collected together are seeing through this retina.

The Self is not touched, only the body is born and dies.
Your cumulative samskaras give rise to the impetus for another lifetime.
This unceasing rebirth is called samsara...it is suffering, this goes on until Enlightenment.
Enlightenment is the fire of knowledge which burns the samskaras, and then your birth and death problems end.

Q: My home is in America where I am an educator, I would like to raise the consciousness of the Americans by using the media of videos. What is the main thing that I should tell Americans about thinking?
Papaji: Tell them not to do it! (giggles) Americans have learned enough, in fact they are the teachers of the whole world. People from all over the world go to America for their advanced degrees. They can learn everything in America except how to Be. For this they must come to Lucknow. Tell them this and tell them to always be faithful to themselves and others.
Tell them when this thought of, "I am the body" comes, check it, and keep it away. Again and again they are to do this. Then something new will come. Something which is not the body will appear. When the billion year old thought, "I am the body" comes, check it. Again and again check it.
Q: I don't have a lot of success checking thoughts.
P: If you can't check the thought, then just let it come.
If it comes, then don't run after it.
It will come and it will stay and it will go.
Just watching may be easier than stopping it.
If any thought comes treat it like a car coming down the road toward you. Do you run after the car? No! So like this let the thought come, let the thought stay and let it go. It cannot stay for more than an instant because another is waiting behind it. In this moment there is no thought. Only in the last moment is there thought. What do you think in this moment?
Q: Nothing
P: In this moment nobody can think. Everybody thinks in the graves of the graveyards. This moment is the moment of love and peace, but everybody misses it. Thought is the last moment, not this moment.
Q: In the present there is no room for thoughts.
P: So stay Here! What difficulty is there?

Ramana's Devotion

I went back to Ramanasramam and asked the Maharshi, 'Are you the person who appeared to me in Madras and told me, "Krishna bhakti alone is true"?' He heard my question but he didn't give me a reply.

While I was waiting for an answer, a group of devotees came from Vrindavan. They were on a tour of pilgrimage places in the South. On their visit to Tirupati they had heard that there was swami in Tiruvanamalai who was worth visiting. So, they all came along to have darshan. The leader presented the Maharshi with a picture of Krishna playing the flute for Radha. It was a beautiful picture. As the Maharshi was looking at the picture, tears started trickling down his cheeks. When you have intense devotion for Krishna, you can easily pick out other devotees who have that same passion. I could see that these were real tears of devotion and that they came from the heart and not from the mind. As I watched the tears trickling down his cheeks, I felt them trickling into my own Heart. It was a divine shower that filled my own Heart with love. He was so happy looking at that picture, and I felt so happy looking at him appreciate it.

I thought to myself, "This man has been hiding his devotion from me. He doesn't like to show it publicly, but now I have found out his secret. He is just as much a bhakta as I am."

A bird cannot fly without two wings. After this revalation I saw that the Maharshi was soaring on the twin wings of bhakti and jnana [ devotion and transcendental knowledge ]. From that moment on, my doubts evaporated and I had immense faith in him.

Sometimes when I see people who are too serious about some foolish thing I think of something the Maharshi used to say:
When you are traveling on the train
will you keep the baggage on your head or under your feet?
This is the difference between the Wise
and the rest of the universe.
The Wise do not carry their baggage,
but almost everyone does.
Thinking of friends and finances and things not even come or already gone is carrying your baggage. This is the difference between living in peace or suffering. It depends on where your baggage is.
If you feel that the baggage you are carrying is of no use, drop it down. Then walk away Enlightened into the realms where very few have gone. Don't carrying anything.

Find the best ways to quiet the mind. The instant that the mind is stilled there is meditation. Meditation has to be perennial, permanent, not just sitting for an hour a day. It does not mean chanting the thought, "I have to be free." It means being centered in the Self, which is alone true; all else is false. There must be a very strong understanding in your mind. It is not difficult once you discover the ability to discern what is real from what is unreal. Pleasures of the senses may try to distract you, religions may promise you pleasures in heaven after life, but you will have to abandon all these things. Abandon studying any book; it does not help you. Now you open your own book for the first time. Open your own book and keep quiet.

You are the unchangeable Awareness in which all activity takes place.
Always rest in peace.
You are eternal Being, unbounded and undivided.
Just keep Quiet. All is well. Keep Quiet Here and Now.
You are Happiness, you are Peace, you are Freedom.
Do not entertain any notions that you are in trouble.
Be kind to yourself. Open to your Heart and simply Be.
Those who know This know Everything.
If not, even the most learned know nothing at all.

Surrender, let Silence have you.
Surrender to the source,
Surrender to awareness, this is the only place of protection.
Surrender your heart and you will know all.
Surrender to Consciousness and Bliss.
Surrender means to surrender your bondage and to simply be Freedom.

Surrender is the ego bowing down to its Source. No more demands or commands, but putting all in the hands of Source. Submit to Consciousness and Bliss and you will be happy. Surrender the addiction to your senses. You don't need to stop them, but you need to have perfect control over them. Ego is a poor driver of these five horses, but the Atman charioteer will not make a mistake. Surrender the reigns of your senses to the Atman. As the river surrenders to the ocean, surrender yourself to the Self, the Source. And if you find you are still swimming on the surface of the ocean: stop swimming and you will sink into the depths of Love.

Don't run at projections on the screen, be very wise.
Do not lose your peace at any cost.
Things will rise and fall so do not be caught!
Peace is most important, you have to be happy in lila,
no-mind-limitless-happiness with Freedom in your mind,
not problems. Here in this moment there is no problem
and daily life is within this moment, you cannot walk out of it.
Just try to invite past and future problems into this moment.
They cannot touch Here so do things of Now Now,
and do not touch yesterday or tomorrow.
Remove all becoming, you are Being.
Becoming is effort, Being is no effort.
You are always That so be like the breeze
that is attached to neither the garbage nor the garden
that it blows over.
Do not run away from worldly activities,
only always keep in the "I am Self," stay as the screen
on which all projected activities take place.
In all activities simply keep Quiet and know "I am home."
Your business is to keep Quiet!

You simply have to watch:
Where does mind arise from?
Where does thought come from?
What is the source of this thought?
Then you will see that you have always been Free and that everything has been a dream.

There is no sadhana better than just staying as Peace.
If you must do any practice, then do Vichar.
Joy is also a good sadhana because
it destroys mind, so always be happy.
Always think of It and be happy:
spend the rest of your life knowing
you are Existence-Consciousness-Bliss.

Some practice is better than getting lost in samsara
and is good in that it fatigues the mind,
but typical sadhana is usually important only for the ego.
All sadhana is projected by ego so it is on a sandy foundation.
This ego projection is samsara so search only for the seeker.
"I" is ego so when this meditates there are no good results.

Choice of practice depends on the choice of results.
Brahman has no attributes and is beyond mind
so no practice will take you to that: It is self revealing.
Ramana says "Simply keep Quiet for it is Here and Now."
This is the nearest practice because
Brahman is your nature.

What passes away is not Eternal.
Every form will pass away, and the Essence is formless.
If you are attached to the form you are making a mistake.
It is not the form which gives you light,
but something else which is deep inside your own Heart.
That is your Guru.
That Guru abides in the heart of all Beings,
not only human beings, but all the animals and plants.
You will see this when you see your own Essence within.
Then every plant and animal will speak to you as they speak to me.

During all activities of life
is to accept whatever comes
and not care about what does not come.
Things will come so enjoy them and be happy
Let the play happen by the Supreme Power;
you will be taken care of.
Be free to be happy, love has no traps.
If you are happy all will be happy,
if you suffer, all will suffer,
if your mind smells bad others will be affected.
Keep yourself happy in peace, Light, Wisdom, Consciousness
This is your responsibility.
Be happy and have compassion
and live hand and hand with nature.
This makes birth worthwhile.
Start from Heart and see that all arises from Heart.
Always do this, Always be This.

Have no fear and plunge into your own Being.
When "you" disappear, all fear will also.
Stay Quiet, be Still, Here you are.
Stay as presence in your Heart.
Do not fear meeting the Self,
it is what you always been.
Nothing can be lost, have no fear.

There can also be fear of "losing it."
Only when you possess something does the fear of losing arise.
Only Self cannot be held, so only Self cannot be lost.
The only way to avoid fear is to return to the inner beauty,
the Self, the Heart on the right.

I traveled all over India looking for a Guru. I was in the army then and so I had a superiority complex. (giggles) So, I would find a teacher and ask them if they could show me God. Then all the devotees would look at me and show me their king beards which they grew during their fifty year stay with that particular guru. They would say, "We have searched unsuccessfully for years! How do you expect to come in here with your shoes on and see God in a minute?"

Then they would push me out. What to do?
But, if you search for something so intensely that you won't even take food until you find it, then you will get what you want. So, this story ends at the feet of Ramana Maharshi. I asked him, "Can you show me God?"

He said, "No God cannot be seen, he is not an object of senses which can be seen."

"Nee Naan Bhagavan:" You-I-God
You can't see God because you are God!
How can you search for That which you are?

At that moment I had trust that I am God and this trust didn't falter and still it stays....
You have to trust what you are.

A man wrote to me from Germany, saying: "Although we have never met physically, I have heard your words on a video tape. The words were, 'Keep quiet, keep quiet, keep quiet.' I can't describe the effect these words have had, or what has happened to me since hearing them. I have never heard this quietness described before in any of the books I have read in my life. Other teachers don't speak in this way. Some force has had a tremendous effect on me, such that I was able to keep quiet."

We will examine this: the nature of this quietness: How to have it.

Seven thousand years ago, Arjuna asked Krishna how to quiet the mind. "It is just like the wind," he said. "You can't hold it in your fist. It is so turbulent, how can it be controlled?" Krishna's answer was simple: It can be done through detachment and practice. These two words are very significant. How can one easily discover viragya, detachment? Everyone wants to enjoy the objects of the senses - seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, tasting - that is all they are interested in.

So how can the mind be detached from its sense objects, and brought to quietness? It will happen only when you know that all these objects do not bring abiding peace and rest, that thinking again and again of your desires cannot bring satisfaction. Through repeatedly seeking pleasure and never finding peace you are creating some sort of displeasure with these things. Naturally you want to detach yourself from the things which have not brought you peace and rest.

There was a famous saint, a poor man, about five hundred years ago named Thyagaraya. People interested in music know his name. He is the king of artists, the king of singers and musicians. He says,

Santham laka soukhyam ladu.

When there is no quietness, even kingdoms will not bring you happiness.

When we know that sense objects cannot bring us permanent happiness, the mind will slowly withdraw from these objects.

In the Vedas it is declared, "Neti neti." [Not this, not that.]

This world is a garden, a game, play this divine game very well. See things only as they are but do not possess them or you will be in trouble because even your body is transient.
The next breath is not guaranteed so do what you have to do Now: play well, play wisely, by first finding out who you are. Yoga only, no bhoga, first finish your work, then go to the world with a heart that is dancing.
Don't use words for this dance because the game is tricky. Just be silent.

The world is like a tail of a dog, its nature is to curl.
The best you can do is to stay Quiet
and not let anything bother you.
Visitors will come and go, don't interfere with these waves.
Be always empty and let desires dance.
Being asleep in the waking state is
being asleep to desires and aversions.

Always rememeber:
The thieves of Peace are thieves in an empty house
because only imagination suffers.
You are That which remains Untouched.
Peace always is,
find and reject the imaginary rejecter of this Peace.
The 'I' thought is this thief of Freedom,
and inquiry is the best way to destroy it and its tendencies.
You don't have to look at the tendencies;
The only way to get rid of them is Freedom
and inquiry is the best way to freedom,
so always stay towards Self.
This is abandonment of painful conditioning.
Abandon vasanas and mind and you are Peace.
Abandon the notion "I am bound,"
and always face Self.

When you are one with all
do not hold or possess and It will Be.
When you are connected to all things
do not hold onto the connections
because this makes them separations
and you will have divided yourself by creating "other."

As the lotus does not touch the water,
so do not let the world enter your heart.
Being busy in the world is no trouble
unless you are troubled being busy.
Then the only trouble is the trouble.

Let attention go to manifestation,
just know that manifestations is Brahman.
Let there be creations and destructions,
All is Brahman and you are beyond even that always.

So when something comes in front of you just stay as the Truth, which does not move, and react to the circumstances whatever they may be, good or bad. Just react without any possessive concept in you. Whatever happens keep most interested in Self and see that all rises is Self rising out of Self. Self is not interested in possessing things because Self is total. So don't react with interest or reward or possession. Then you will be free and your interactions will be out of compassion and life will be like sailing in the breeze of non-attachment. This breeze comes from Self and will happen after Freedom, not before.

When you are Free still you have to live because still the world will be there but living will be very compassionate. Just love each other, and hold no hatred with anything. This depends on you, how you take things, and whether this "I" is from the ego or whether it is from Nowhere. The "I" from Nowhere contains the whole universe and this is total understanding itself.

Consciousness
The senses cannot feel It and mind cannot understand it.
Consciousness alone is everywhere and rises as 'I" within you.
It is the shining of the sun and the motion of the earth.
It is beyond space and time which derive their existence from it.
The mind cannot go to touch it, or to reach it,
and will miss it if it tries to find it.
These attempts are movements hiding the Stillness.
It is found only by itself when mind does not move.

Check all movements of the mind for one moment only,
stop all desires and all thought for one second only,
and you are beyond the cycle of birth and death forever.
This cycle is samsara, your own imagination.

It has no beginning and only Self knowledge will end it.
The question "Who am I?" will end it.
So firmly decide, "I have to do it Now."
This human birth is such a blessing, don't waste it!
Postponement is samsara, the cycle of suffering.
Whenever you are in trouble ask, "Am I dreaming?"
This is "Who am I?" and it will wake you up
and make you fall in love with your own Self.
Then you will know all "others,"
and will take this candle wherever you go!

You are what all happenings happen in. What happens must happen so remain unaffected as peace. Be peaceful and this peace will spread. What rises from peace is Peace and what rises from confusion is confusion. So be peace and give this to the universe, it is all you should do. Even thinking "I am Peace" disturbs this peace, so just be quiet, be as you are.
