Papaji: The concept "I am a body" is a dream.

Questioner : This is very difficult to understand.

Papaji: No, it is not difficult. Every day your experience this. Every night, when you go to sleep you experience this. You leave your body and friends behind and fall asleep. At that moment, are you happy or unhappy? To leave everything behind – apartment, car, money, friends – and say, "Good night, I am going to sleep." You leave the body, the mind and the ego all behind. And where are you wanting to go and disappear from all the pleasures of life? Why do you want to hide yourself and be alone? It must be a happier place than this world, that's why you want to run away. To enjoy your Self, alone. No one likes suffering. You must be very happy in sleep, therefore, you turn your back on everything and go to sleep alone, don't you?.

Papaji: First, I will tell you a little story. The story runs like this. Every day, a local washermen goes down to a river to wash clothes. He loads the soiled clothes on the back of several donkeys, washes the clothes, waits for them to dry on the river bank, and then returns home at the end of the day.

One day, a lioness goes down to the river to drink some water. In those days, lions were hunted for their skin and their head. Nowadays, it is forbidden. While this lioness was drinking water, a hunter hiding behind a bush shoots and kills her. This lioness was pregnant, and while skinning the lioness, the hunter pulled out a lion cub and left it on the bank.

A little later, the washerman goes to the river and sees the dead lioness and the newly born lion cub. He decided to look after the cub instead of leaving it to die. He washed it before putting it in a basket and returned home with it. He fed it milk and slowly when the cub grew big enough, he took the lion cub with him each day down to the river, where he left it along with the donkeys to eat grass on the bank of the river. It got used to walking with the donkeys. After awhile, it got rather big, so the washerman decided to load the soiled clothes on the young lion's back as well, treating it like the other donkeys. This lion slowly became a 'donkey', doing exactly what the other donkeys did. He lived with other donkeys – carried clothes on his back, drank milk and ate grass just like them. He had no idea what a lion was.

Several months later, another lion came to drink at the river and was amazed to see this lion cub eating grass near the river bank along with the donkeys. Lions usually eat donkeys and humans, not grass. It moved closer for a better look. He couldn't believe his eyes. Was he dreaming? How could this be? He got even closer, which caused all the donkeys to flee away and the washerman to climb a tree. The tame lion also tried to run away, because he was afraid just like the donkeys. The hunter lion chased and caught the tame lion. He jumped on him and knocked him to the grass.

The tame lion was very afraid. "Please, sir, please don't eat me", he said. "Let me go and join the others."
"But you are a lion", the one on top replied.

"No, sir, I am a donkey."

So the hunter lion took his charge down to the river.

"Look at your reflection", he said. "We are the same."

The tame lion looked into the water and saw two lions looking back.

"You are a lion and you have always been a lion."

"Then how is it that I felt I was a donkey?"

"By associating with donkeys you became a donkey."

"Then how can I now live like a lion since I have only lived as a donkey?"

"Listen, look, open your mouth and utter a roar, like I do." He roared and then the other lion roared!

"It is as simple as that. Don't practice being a lion. Roar! How long does it take to roar? No time! Open your mouth and it's finished."

"I am a lion!" He never returned back with the donkeys.

He needed a teacher to tell him, he needed someone similar, another lion to tell him,"Utter the roar." And what is that roar? "I am Reality. I am free! I am God itself!" This is the roar. Afterwards, you will not go and play with any donkeys. Playing with donkeys means listening to the senses, chasing after objects which constantly change. This is what I call "sleeping to the Self". So, for one instant of your life, turn your face towards the Self. Keep quiet and see who you are. Utter a roar.

Those who cannot keep quiet, they are donkeys. Let them play all their life with other donkeys, getting loaded with soiled linen, under the command of the washerman.

Hidden tendencies arise to leave when you are Quiet,
so it is a good sign when vasanas arise.
Do not be dismayed because they are Self.
Let vasanas arise, they do not exist.
The world is a playground for the wise
and a graveyard for the foolish.
Let the vasanas play, they are transient imaginations
and even the "I" to which they occur is imagination itself.
Abide as Substratum and allow circumstances to come and go.
Stay Quiet with no intention, no notion,
not even inquire for Freedom, and don't utter the word "I."
Then the gods and demons of the vasanas will vanish.

Your true nature does not come and go.
Play with what comes and goes.
When they arise they will disappear.
Allow them to go away.
Let things happen through mind-ego
and just stay Quiet as they happen,
with the firm conviction: I Am I Am.

You have been given a concept by most of the teachers that there is darkness, and that you have to spend your whole life clearing this darkness. No one speaks about light; everyone is trying to remove darkness and ignorance when it does not really exist.

First of all, look for yourself! Has anyone seen any ignorance? Sometimes when people who come to see me come closer to keeping quiet they say, "I do not understand." What is there to understand? Simply keep quiet - this is what you really are. How can there be any doubt? In keeping quiet you discover what you really are.

Through spiritual practices you overlook the one who is causing this to happen. Who is involving your limbs in the practice, your intellect in the practice? Who is causing your mind to be involved in trying to get understanding? If the one causing activity is not there you cannot conduct any practice. This is why I tell you to simply keep quiet. Then you will know what you truly are and what you have always been, and this is indestructible. All else will be destroyed, only Existence itself remains. The Truth will always remain - it Is - it is eternal. That which is not this truth does not exist at all.

You have two choices: Either you follow most teachers and spend your life trying to remove or clean out the mind. First you will have to find out if the mind exists. No one has seen the mind. Even if you found it, how do you propose to clean it? Everyone is practicing cleaning the mind but there is no one so far who has cleaned it. Where is this mind to be cleaned?

The second choice is to keep quiet and you will know who really you are. This is very simple. It is not going to take you time; in fact time does not appear. There is nothing outside that can help you, you have just to keep quiet - that's all - and you will know then you are eternal. You are Eternal Existence itself.

Don't waste your time purifying the mind because the mind can never be pure.
Even the desire to be pure is a trick of the mind. And you need not drop the mind because it doesn't exist. How can you drop something that doesn't exist?

Q : Should I abide as the pure “I" and have faith that purity will come?

Sri Papaji :

Don't waste your time in the purity of mind
because mind cannot be pure.

Even the desire to be pure is the trick of the mind.

You will spend many lives purifying the mind,
but it will never be pure.

Look at the story of Vishwamitra and Manika.
After purifying his mind for 10,000 years
he still falls for her instantly.

It is better to just allow your desires to arise and
not let them touch you.

Let them arise and let them be fullfilled.

You simply stay Quiet.

Don't try to become anything,
don't go anywhere
and
don't do anything
and
don't undo anything.

Find the source of these concepts and stay there.

This is bliss, nothing else.

This knowledge is bliss.

Everyone is afraid: "I will lose the world, my attachments, my relationships, my dear ones." This is a foolish concept. On the contrary, when you are enlightened you will begin to have really good relationships, even with the animals, even with the plant life. You will love everyone. First enlightenment, then you will be a good human being.

A man with no thoughts in the mind is emitting rays of peace and love! Everyone is attracted to the person who has no concept in the mind.

Just keep quiet and see what happens. All nature will love you. You will be better taken care of than by your own mother who gave birth to you and put you in all this trouble.

But this other mother -- consciousness, if you know that she is your original mother -- she will take care of you and give you peace and happiness and deathlessness also. No other mother can give you this. Deathlessness in eternity. This mother we do not recognize, and we get into trouble.

When you love, you love all beings. When you eat, everybody is eating off your plate, even the beings who have died, and the ones who are yet to be. When you see, all the eyes collected together are seeing through this retina.

The Self is not touched, only the body is born and dies.
Your cumulative samskaras give rise to the impetus for another lifetime.
This unceasing rebirth is called samsara...it is suffering, this goes on until Enlightenment.
Enlightenment is the fire of knowledge which burns the samskaras, and then your birth and death problems end.

Q: My home is in America where I am an educator, I would like to raise the consciousness of the Americans by using the media of videos. What is the main thing that I should tell Americans about thinking?
Papaji: Tell them not to do it! (giggles) Americans have learned enough, in fact they are the teachers of the whole world. People from all over the world go to America for their advanced degrees. They can learn everything in America except how to Be. For this they must come to Lucknow. Tell them this and tell them to always be faithful to themselves and others.
Tell them when this thought of, "I am the body" comes, check it, and keep it away. Again and again they are to do this. Then something new will come. Something which is not the body will appear. When the billion year old thought, "I am the body" comes, check it. Again and again check it.
Q: I don't have a lot of success checking thoughts.
P: If you can't check the thought, then just let it come.
If it comes, then don't run after it.
It will come and it will stay and it will go.
Just watching may be easier than stopping it.
If any thought comes treat it like a car coming down the road toward you. Do you run after the car? No! So like this let the thought come, let the thought stay and let it go. It cannot stay for more than an instant because another is waiting behind it. In this moment there is no thought. Only in the last moment is there thought. What do you think in this moment?
Q: Nothing
P: In this moment nobody can think. Everybody thinks in the graves of the graveyards. This moment is the moment of love and peace, but everybody misses it. Thought is the last moment, not this moment.
Q: In the present there is no room for thoughts.
P: So stay Here! What difficulty is there?

Ramana's Devotion

I went back to Ramanasramam and asked the Maharshi, 'Are you the person who appeared to me in Madras and told me, "Krishna bhakti alone is true"?' He heard my question but he didn't give me a reply.

While I was waiting for an answer, a group of devotees came from Vrindavan. They were on a tour of pilgrimage places in the South. On their visit to Tirupati they had heard that there was swami in Tiruvanamalai who was worth visiting. So, they all came along to have darshan. The leader presented the Maharshi with a picture of Krishna playing the flute for Radha. It was a beautiful picture. As the Maharshi was looking at the picture, tears started trickling down his cheeks. When you have intense devotion for Krishna, you can easily pick out other devotees who have that same passion. I could see that these were real tears of devotion and that they came from the heart and not from the mind. As I watched the tears trickling down his cheeks, I felt them trickling into my own Heart. It was a divine shower that filled my own Heart with love. He was so happy looking at that picture, and I felt so happy looking at him appreciate it.

I thought to myself, "This man has been hiding his devotion from me. He doesn't like to show it publicly, but now I have found out his secret. He is just as much a bhakta as I am."

A bird cannot fly without two wings. After this revalation I saw that the Maharshi was soaring on the twin wings of bhakti and jnana [ devotion and transcendental knowledge ]. From that moment on, my doubts evaporated and I had immense faith in him.

Sometimes when I see people who are too serious about some foolish thing I think of something the Maharshi used to say:
When you are traveling on the train
will you keep the baggage on your head or under your feet?
This is the difference between the Wise
and the rest of the universe.
The Wise do not carry their baggage,
but almost everyone does.
Thinking of friends and finances and things not even come or already gone is carrying your baggage. This is the difference between living in peace or suffering. It depends on where your baggage is.
If you feel that the baggage you are carrying is of no use, drop it down. Then walk away Enlightened into the realms where very few have gone. Don't carrying anything.

Find the best ways to quiet the mind. The instant that the mind is stilled there is meditation. Meditation has to be perennial, permanent, not just sitting for an hour a day. It does not mean chanting the thought, "I have to be free." It means being centered in the Self, which is alone true; all else is false. There must be a very strong understanding in your mind. It is not difficult once you discover the ability to discern what is real from what is unreal. Pleasures of the senses may try to distract you, religions may promise you pleasures in heaven after life, but you will have to abandon all these things. Abandon studying any book; it does not help you. Now you open your own book for the first time. Open your own book and keep quiet.

Surrender, let Silence have you.
Surrender to the source,
Surrender to awareness, this is the only place of protection.
Surrender your heart and you will know all.
Surrender to Consciousness and Bliss.
Surrender means to surrender your bondage and to simply be Freedom.

Surrender is the ego bowing down to its Source. No more demands or commands, but putting all in the hands of Source. Submit to Consciousness and Bliss and you will be happy. Surrender the addiction to your senses. You don't need to stop them, but you need to have perfect control over them. Ego is a poor driver of these five horses, but the Atman charioteer will not make a mistake. Surrender the reigns of your senses to the Atman. As the river surrenders to the ocean, surrender yourself to the Self, the Source. And if you find you are still swimming on the surface of the ocean: stop swimming and you will sink into the depths of Love.

Don't run at projections on the screen, be very wise.
Do not lose your peace at any cost.
Things will rise and fall so do not be caught!
Peace is most important, you have to be happy in lila,
no-mind-limitless-happiness with Freedom in your mind,
not problems. Here in this moment there is no problem
and daily life is within this moment, you cannot walk out of it.
Just try to invite past and future problems into this moment.
They cannot touch Here so do things of Now Now,
and do not touch yesterday or tomorrow.
Remove all becoming, you are Being.
Becoming is effort, Being is no effort.
You are always That so be like the breeze
that is attached to neither the garbage nor the garden
that it blows over.
Do not run away from worldly activities,
only always keep in the "I am Self," stay as the screen
on which all projected activities take place.
In all activities simply keep Quiet and know "I am home."

There is no sadhana better than just staying as Peace.
If you must do any practice, then do Vichar.
Joy is also a good sadhana because
it destroys mind, so always be happy.
Always think of It and be happy:
spend the rest of your life knowing
you are Existence-Consciousness-Bliss.

Some practice is better than getting lost in samsara
and is good in that it fatigues the mind,
but typical sadhana is usually important only for the ego.
All sadhana is projected by ego so it is on a sandy foundation.
This ego projection is samsara so search only for the seeker.
"I" is ego so when this meditates there are no good results.

Choice of practice depends on the choice of results.
Brahman has no attributes and is beyond mind
so no practice will take you to that: It is self revealing.
Ramana says "Simply keep Quiet for it is Here and Now."
This is the nearest practice because
Brahman is your nature.

That is your Guru.
That Guru abides in the heart of all Beings,

I traveled all over India looking for a Guru. I was in the army then and so I had a superiority complex. (giggles) So, I would find a teacher and ask them if they could show me God. Then all the devotees would look at me and show me their king beards which they grew during their fifty year stay with that particular guru. They would say, "We have searched unsuccessfully for years! How do you expect to come in here with your shoes on and see God in a minute?"

Then they would push me out. What to do?
But, if you search for something so intensely that you won't even take food until you find it, then you will get what you want. So, this story ends at the feet of Ramana Maharshi. I asked him, "Can you show me God?"

He said, "No God cannot be seen, he is not an object of senses which can be seen."

"Nee Naan Bhagavan:" You-I-God
You can't see God because you are God!
How can you search for That which you are?

At that moment I had trust that I am God and this trust didn't falter and still it stays....
You have to trust what you are.

A man wrote to me from Germany, saying: "Although we have never met physically, I have heard your words on a video tape. The words were, 'Keep quiet, keep quiet, keep quiet.' I can't describe the effect these words have had, or what has happened to me since hearing them. I have never heard this quietness described before in any of the books I have read in my life. Other teachers don't speak in this way. Some force has had a tremendous effect on me, such that I was able to keep quiet."

We will examine this: the nature of this quietness: How to have it.

Seven thousand years ago, Arjuna asked Krishna how to quiet the mind. "It is just like the wind," he said. "You can't hold it in your fist. It is so turbulent, how can it be controlled?" Krishna's answer was simple: It can be done through detachment and practice. These two words are very significant. How can one easily discover viragya, detachment? Everyone wants to enjoy the objects of the senses - seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, tasting - that is all they are interested in.

So how can the mind be detached from its sense objects, and brought to quietness? It will happen only when you know that all these objects do not bring abiding peace and rest, that thinking again and again of your desires cannot bring satisfaction. Through repeatedly seeking pleasure and never finding peace you are creating some sort of displeasure with these things. Naturally you want to detach yourself from the things which have not brought you peace and rest.

There was a famous saint, a poor man, about five hundred years ago named Thyagaraya. People interested in music know his name. He is the king of artists, the king of singers and musicians. He says,

Santham laka soukhyam ladu.

When there is no quietness, even kingdoms will not bring you happiness.

When we know that sense objects cannot bring us permanent happiness, the mind will slowly withdraw from these objects.

In the Vedas it is declared, "Neti neti." [Not this, not that.]
