Devotion is not drama. Devotion is a way of living. Devotion is the way you walk, the way you breathe, and the way your heart beats.

Questioner: How long does it take to get enlightened?

Sadhguru: It is not really a question of time, it is really a question of when will you do it. ‘How long does it take?’ There is no such thing because you are here. If you want to realize yourself, should it take time? In reality it should not take time. But it takes time because you do not give in all at once; you give in by installments. So whether you want to go by small installments and take 100 lifetimes, or you want to do it today is your choice. How long it takes simply depends on how intense is your longing to know.

Everybody would like to know what is after death if they could get it on the Internet. If you can login and just find out, everybody would like to know, but how badly do you really want to know? If you can casually ask ‘What happens after death? What is the source of my creation,’ that means you do not know the immensity of the question. If you burn with this question, to such an extent that you cannot utter a word but you burn, then knowing is not far away.

It is very simple. The reason why it is so far away is because the longing is still lukewarm. It is still not killing you. Still, it is on the side. If you want to know the truth like some entertainment, it will not happen. If you want it in such a way that that is all you want, then it is just a moment away, because what you want to know is within you. What is within you cannot be denied to you by anybody except yourself, isn’t it? So you just have to get yourself out of the way. Either you go in installments or you just go once.

Enlightenment need not always happen with a bang. It can happen quietly, it can be like a flower blossoming. The greatest things happening on the planet do not make any noise, isn’t it? Now a seed is becoming a plant, a plant is becoming a tree. It is not a small phenomenon, it is a tremendous phenomenon. Does it make any noise? The little achievements make a lot of noise. You know the cock gets up in the morning and makes a lot of noise. But the big things happening in existence do not make any noise. It is happening quietly isn’t it? So enlightenment also happens quietly without any noise – no big firecrackers happening, very quietly from one dimension to another. In the garden the flower quietly blooms but once it has bloomed you cannot ignore it; it is significant. The fragrance and the beauty of it is undeniably there.

So similarly enlightenment, blossoming from one dimension to another happens very quietly, but when it happens, the moment you notice it, it is a very big thing. You cannot ignore it.

Every human organ is designed to last a lifetime. Why are we developing a culture that human organs are failing half way down? So this is a culture that we have to develop that individual people have to take responsibility to see that their bodies last for their lifetime.

Speech is of the society, words are of the mind, sounds are of nature, the soundless is of the beyond. Thus, if one gets identified with one’s own speech, he will belong to the society. If he gets identified with his words, he will belong to the mind. If he gets identified with the sounds, he will belong to nature. If one dissolves in the soundless silence, to him alone the realms of the beyond will yield.

A litmus test for you whether you are in touch with truth or not is just this; if there is any kind of suffering in you right now, you are not in touch with truth. If you are in touch with truth, there can be no suffering in you, it’s as simple as that. How deep your suffering is shows how far away from truth you are right now.

The way life happens is first being, then doing, and then having. You are going the "having-doing-being" way, which leads to an endless pursuit of having. This is the basis of an unfulfilled life. The way life happens is first being, then doing, and then having. But right now, people always think first of having. For example, when you were at a certain stage of life, you may decided that you want to have a certain kind of life that includes a certain kind of partner, a house, a car and whatever else. Then you think, "How can I have all this?" The moment you start thinking how to get it, that is when you start moving against life. You are going the "having-doing-being" way, which leads to an endless pursuit of having. This is the basis of an unfulfilled life.

You must first establish your way of being. Then, whether you get to have what you desire or not, you will still be wonderful. The quality of your life is decided by your way of being. What you get to have is only a question of capability and situations that are conducive. If you make this simple shift to "being-doing-having," then a large part of your destiny will be by your will.

Seeker: Master, in my experience on this path, it's not always such a joyride. I feel intense pain too, pain that's around me.

Sadhguru: Now, that which you call as 'me' or as 'you' are the same. Whatever you do, every action, every thought that you generate touches the world in some way. So whatever you do touches everything. As you become more and more sensitive, as you become more and more aware, as your consciousness expands, this becomes a life experience, not just somebody's teachings. If you are sensitive enough, if you are intense enough, if you love enough, whatever happens somewhere will happen to you also. You can actually feel it, maybe in a small way. However, it can happen only if you are open enough at that moment. Otherwise, it won't: you will miss it. So your question will be, "Okay, if pain comes to you, why should it come to me?" I am telling you that will be your growth.

Once, Shankaran Pillai happily agreed to take his wife to visit a holy place, hoping she would renounce some of her worldly desires. Therefore, he chose a monastery in Himachal Pradesh (A Northern Indian State in the Himalayan Region) and they set off on their pilgrimage. This monastery is perched high on a cliff. The only way to reach it is to sit in a basket and be pulled to the top by the monks up there. Shankarai Pillai, his wife a big woman and a monk, huddled together in the basket. The monks at the top were pulling and tugging with all their might. Obviously, the ride up this steep cliff became terrifying. With each tug, Shankaran Pillai was getting exceedingly nervous. Once they reached about half way up, he noticed that the rope was old and frayed. He gave a quick glance towards his wife, then to the rope and again to his wife. Then in a trembling voice, he anxiously asked the monk in the basket, "How often do you guys change the rope of this thing, anyway?" The monk thought for a moment and answered brusquely, "Whenever it breaks."

So, not everything in life comes as a joyride, Raja. Don't think that you will grow only in pleasure. Most people will grow only with pain, not with pleasure. It's unfortunate, but that's the truth. Generally, people only go down with pleasure. They don't go up with pleasure. Please see, the quality of a human being is like this, when life offers more and more pleasures to a man, he doesn't grow. He goes down. In terms of the real quality of a human being, only when suffering comes, when pain comes, does a man stand up as a human being. You can see great human beings surface only when the society is really suffering. When India was under the oppression of British rulers, how many wonderful people stood up? Where are the now? They have just fallen back into their comforts. That's all. All those Gandhi's, Patel's, Tilak's are still there, but they're dormant. When pain came, they all became alive. They left everything behind and stood up as giants. Where are they now? This is the human misfortune that still there's not enough intelligence in the world that human beings will raise to their peaks when everything is well. They wait for calamities.

Question: Sadhguru, what should be the foremost quality of a seeker ?

Sadhguru: If you are a genuine seeker, that's all that is needed. If your seeking is the only quality you have, that is definitely the most important thing. Most of the seekers are only off-and-on seekers. In 24 hours, how many of you are even conscious of your seeking, and how many moments ?

"No,no, I have done so many programs. I even did 55 days of Hatha Yoga."
What you did yesterday is not the point. This happened to Charles M. Schwab. Schwab became one of the big steel magnates on the planet at one time. Before he stood on his own feet, he was working for Andrew Carnegie, another great entrepreneur. One day, he sent a telegram to Carnegie, saying, "Yesterday, we broke all the records." So immediately, Carnegie sent back a message, "But what are you doing today?"

That is all I am asking you - what are you doing today? People think, "Sadhguru... no compassion in him. It doesn't matter what we have done, once again he is asking, 'What have we done today?' Because if you are a seeker, what you were yesterday doesn't mean anything to you. "What have you done today?" is the whole thing. The psychological survives , nourishes and flourishes on the past. The existential is of the now.

Unless you are truly concerned about what you are doing today and how you are right now, how can you still be a seeker? "No, I have been a seeker for 10 years." - That doesn't mean anything. Are you a seeker now? Because the existential is only now. The rest is all psychological. I see a lot of past seekers. They have been seekers for 25, 30 years - veterans. What to do with that ? Only if someone is hungry now, you can serve them food, isn't it? If someone is alive now, you can feed them. Somebody was - what can you do with them? So if your seeking is in the past tense, it doesn't mean anything. Are you a seeker now, right now ? If you are, that is what means most to me because only then can I do something with you. If you are a past seeker, we are just neighbors. If you are a seeker now, I have something to do with you right now.

Devotion need not necessarily be to a person. Devotion is a certain way to be. If you are on the path, not off and on, but in every moment of your life, you are a devotee. You do not have to be a devotee of anything or anyone in particular. You can be a devotee because devotion is your quality.

Question: Sadhguru, can you please explain what Krishna says in Chapter 12 of the Bhagavad Gita, "Yoga Of Devotion'?

Sadhguru: Arjuna asked 'Who is considered more perfect - those devotees who worship you and are thus always united with you in love, or those who worship the eternal and indestructible and unmanifest?' The Lord of Sri said, ' Those who surrender themselves to me and fix their total devotion on me and worship me eternally with their minds absorbed in me, I consider them to be the most devoted to me. However, those who are devoted to the unmanifest, that which is beyond all senses, all pervading, they also attain me. But those who are absorbed in the unmanifest face excessive tribulation, as for the embodied being the path of that course is difficult to tread. But, O Arjuna, those whose minds are absorbed in me in total faith and who are engaged in devotional service unto me, for them I give deliverance from the cycle of birth and death."

You cannot experience that which is unmanifest - you can only believe in it. Even if you believe in the unmanifest, it is going to be very difficult for you to develop and keep up intense love and devotion towards that which is not. It is so much easier for you to hold your focus of devotion towards that which is. At the same time, he says, "If someone is capable of holding their devotion to the unmanifest, they also will attain me." When he says "me", he is not talking about himself as an individual, he is talking about that dimension which includes both the manifest and the unmanifest. "If someone takes that route, they will also come to me, but it involves much tribulation," because directing your emotions towards something that is not here is difficult for you. You need a form, a shape, a name - something that you can relate to in order to steadily keep up your devotion.

Even if you have lived a stupid life, still ultimate release will not be an issue once you are in a certain presence, unless you really screw it up in the final moments of your life. "As for the embodied being, the path of that course is difficult to tread." This means, if you, as a being who has a body and an intellectual discretion, dedicate yourself to an unmanifest dimension of existence, every day, your intellect will question whether you are really going somewhere or wasting your time. For beings who are not embodied, it is more of a possibility, because they do not have to struggle with their intellect - they go by their tendencies. If they are spiritually oriented, they generally orient themselves towards the unmanifest - not out of conscious choice but out of their tendencies. Therefore, for a disembodied being, a being who is beyond the limitations of the five elements, who is beyond the limitations and the discretion of the intellect, that is a more suitable path. Both for an embodied being, it is better to direct your emotions towards something that you can relate to. That is why he says, being focused on him as a live person, it is much easier to attain. Looking for the unmanifest can become a philosophical drama within yourself, without you making an inch of progress.

"But, O Arjuna, those whose minds are absorbed in me in total faith and who are engaged in devotional service unto me, for them I give deliverance from the cycle of birth and death." This not only Krishna said - any being who is fully realized always says this in one way or another. When people ask me questions like. " Will I get mukti in this jamma(birth)?" I tell them, "Just get onto my bus. You don't have to drive - you just sit in the bus." But your ego is such that you want to do the driving too. There are many people who sit in the backseat and keep driving - usually, they only apply brakes.

If you are in a certain presence, your attainment at the last moment is not an issue. The question is how beautifully you live the remaining part of your life. Even if you have lived a stupid life, still ultimate release will not be an issue once you are in a certain presence, unless you really screw it up in the final moments of your life. If even at the last moment, you do not have the necessary sense and you get into a huge sense of anger, hatred, or desire, life may perpetuate itself. Otherwise, once you made the mistake of sitting with me, when you die, you will be dead for good. That is what he says here too. These translations into English are not quite accurate. What he actually says is, "If at least for one moment, you are truly absorbed in me, you will attain."

He tells Arjuna," Don't bother about the result of the war. You are here. You have to fight. Whether you win or not is a question of capabilities and other factors. Just fight, and do it well. If you win, enjoy the kingdom. if you die, anyway I ensure your ultimate well-being." Again he is making clear that when it comes to external situations, he cannot ensure everything. With the internal, there is absolute guarantee. But he says, "I will make sure there will be no more birth for you." This is true with me too. I can ensure that you will not have another birth, but I cannot ensure that you will have a breakfast tomorrow. That may look ridiculous to a logical mind, "If you can ensure such a big thing, why can't you ensure the breakfast?" That is the reality of life. I cannot ensure tomorrow's breakfast for you, but I can ensure your ultimate well-being. When it comes to inner dimensions, I can completely take charge. When it comes to outside situations, there is no guarantee - everyone has to strive.

~ Sharing by Maa Nirmuta ~

During some of my adventurous days in Himalayas, I happen to spend a few days with a Naga Baba (about 70 years old) who claimed to be enlightened. i definitely felt he had some inexplicable powers. He could read my thought very clearly even though he didn't understand a word of English. I even later checked if I was really thinking in English :) , as it seemed absurd for him to know my single thought of any importance without knowing the language. He spoke to me in Hindi.

He could also heal people, and had in past consecrated temples in Himachal Pradesh. His presence was very powerful, I bursted into tears when I touched his feet. He had a certain power over animals as well.

He wanted me to stay with him for a while, and promised to give me some Siddhi if he can initiate me. Though I was clear that I wanted to walk the spiritual path, I wanted Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev to take me under refuge, because only through his practices, the clarity and longing to walk the path arose within me. Baba was not physically well, so I continued to stay with him for while just to help him recover. He grew very fond of me and asked me to get initiated by him and continue my Sadhana with him. However, my thoughts about Sadhguru won't budge - I just wanted to be initiated by Sadhguru. Baba kept dissuading me to do that.

Anyway, at some point I showed this evolved Naga Baba Sadhguru's photo. He was stunned looking at the photo, and said, ' He is very big!' I asked, ' Baba, who is he?' He said, ' He has come to spread light in the world, he is a light himself.' Then I asked, ' Sadhguru comes to Himalayas sometime, would you like to meet him? ' He said, ' If he comes here, I will wash his feet with my hands, and drink that water! ' (a little while ago Baba claimed to be Enlightened himself). Then I showed him the photo of Dhyanalinga, he bowed down to photo and said, ' One can easily get into a samadhi in this temple, if one is open. If my body allows, I will want to visit Dhyanalinga before I leave my body.' He didn't stop me go back to Sadhguru after that.

There are many such people here who have seen evolved beings bowing down to Sadhguru. I can't even begin to write my own personal experience around this Great Being.

If Krishna, Gautama Buddha, Jesus or Rama were among us today, would you not go to them for salvation, or at least would want to know them, be around them? Trust me ( I know it's hard to trust, especially because i am a monk in his order) he is not famous enough. I don't think Krishna, Rama, Gautama Buddha, Jesus were either during their times. Only a part of humanity knew them; and they had many enemies too!

Such is the nature of human society/human mind.

Homes have to become incubation spaces which nurture the realization that ultimately, the only home a human being can really know is within. If you do not realize in this lifetime that the ultimate home is within, then the only home you will know will be the grave. This is an understanding that a home is constantly culturing us towards. What one person likes, another person dislikes, and vice versa. Still, because you live in the same home, you come to terms with that. You do not have to try to like it. Learning to live with things you do not like is a huge lesson in life. A home brings us to a place.

Q: Sadhguru, your knowing seems to be inexhaustible. Is all this recorded in you or are you just getting it from somewhere?

Sadhguru: Karma is recorded in many ways: memory-wise, sensation-wise, physiology-wise and energy-wise. Similarly with knowledge, some things are transmitted to you on the level of your mind, others on the level of your body. Do you see how once you know how to swim, your body knows it? If you fall into the water, you will swim. You do not have to remember how to ride a bicycle. Once you know how, if you sit on the bicycle, it just goes. Even if you do not ride a bicycle for twenty years and then get on to one, you might be a bit off-balance at first but then you just go, because the memory is in the body. It is no longer in the mind. Transmission is also on many different levels.

I am not carrying the burden of this knowledge when I walk on the street. I do not know anything, but at the same time, I know everything. If you ask me anything concerned with the inner dimensions of a human being, I will come out with the answer, without any hesitation, with absolute clarity. Even if somebody says the Gita is saying something else, I will simply say that maybe Krishna does not know. What can I do about it? It is so crystal-clear within me that it cannot be any other way. It is not that Krishna does not know. It is just that maybe you are not able to see what he is saying.

This is not coming from remembrance. This was transmitted in a different way. My association with my Guru was just for a few moments. Somehow, he did not even want to touch me with his foot. He touched me with his walking stick. What cannot be learned in ten lifetimes was transmitted in one moment. It was all there. It was not just about knowing myself. It was also about various technologies, about how and what to do in every aspect, with absolute clarity. When it is transmitted like this, in the form of energy, not in the form of memory or logical understanding, the burden of knowledge is not on you. This is the difference.

People who have studied knowledge become heavy with it. They become serious. Studied people cannot even laugh usually, but someone who comes from his realization – he knows, but the burden of knowledge does not sit on his head all the time. He carries it very lightly, because this is a different technology altogether.

From the days of the stone tablet to today’s microchips, it’s come a long way. The moment we started producing a book, a million stone tablets could go into a single book. Now a million books can go into a CD and a million CDs can go into a chip. And what is stored in a billion chips can be stored in a certain arrangement of energy. I do not know if modern science is working in this direction, but someday, science will come up with ways to store information in an arrangement of energy. I know this clearly as that is the reality within us. Your energy system or pranamayakosha carries stupendous volumes of information, which is so easy to carry and is not burdensome. It is so simple.

Q: Whatever you are speaking now, is it recorded somewhere in your energy system?

Sadhguru: What is already recorded is what is being spoken and what is being spoken is not something which I am thinking of and speaking. What is being spoken is what life is. It is recorded all the time, everywhere. We do not have to re-record it again. It has always been there. Whether I exist or I do not exist, Truth is; it is always there. We can talk about it if you want to, or we can just see it as it is. Do not worry, it will never be lost.

"The book works almost like a small program by itself. All our other titles are inspirational. This book is transformational."

From Sadhgurus first USA published Book(Sept.2016) :

" INNER ENGINEERING : A Yogi's Guide To Joy "

" ...And Now Yoga."

page 75-79

" Yoga tells us that we are actually composed of five "sheaths," or layers or, more simply, bodies. As there is a medical physiology, there is a yogic one as well. It leads us from the gross to the subtlest levels of reality. Do you have to believe in it ? No. But it is a useful place at which to start our exploration. Your fundamental area of work, however, is only with the realities that you are aware of.

The first sheath or layer to which yoga draws our attention is the physical body - the 'annamayakosha' , or more literally, the food body. What you call the "body" right now is just an accumulated heap of food. It is the product of all the nourishment you have ingested over the years. That is how it gets its name.

The second layers is the ' manomayakosha ' , or the mental body. Today, doctors are talking a great deal about psychosomatic ailments. This means that what happens in the mind affects what happens in the body. This is because what you call "mind" is not just the brain. It is not located in any single part of the human anatomy. Instead, every cell has its own intelligence, so there is an entire mental body, an entire anatomy of the mind.

Whatever happens in the mental body happens in the physical body, and, in turn, whatever happens in the physical body happens in the mental body. Every fluctuation on the level of the mind has a chemical reaction, and every chemical reaction, in turn, generates a fluctuation on the level of the mind.

The physical and mental bodies are like your hardware and software. Hardware and software cannot do anything unless you plug into quality power. So, the third layer of the self is the ' pranamayakosha ' , or the energy body. If you keep your energy body in perfect balance, there will be no disease in your physical or mental bodies. Today there is scientific evidence to show that the impact of genetic memory on the human being is not absolute. Except the fundamental aspects of the DNA, everything can be changed, including the genetic trends of susceptibility to ailments. Infectious diseases happen because of external organisms, but chronic diseases are manufactured daily by human beings. When your energy body is in full vibrancy and proper balance, chronic diseases cannot exist in the body. I could introduce you to thousands of people who have gotten rid of their physical and psychological ailments just by doing certain simple yogic practices. These practices are not aimed at the disease. They are just aimed at bringing a certain harmony and vitality to the energy body.

These are the three dimensions of the self you are aware of right now: the physical, the mental, the energetic. They are essentially physical in nature, though each is more subtle than the preceding one. It is like a lightbulb, electricity, and light - all these are physical. One you can hold in your hand; the other you can feel; and the third takes a sensitive receptor, like the eye, to experience. But they are essentially physical, which is why you can experience them through your sense organs.

However, there is a fourth layer called the ' vignanamayakosha ' or the etheric body. Gnana means "knowledge." Vishesh gnana means "extraordinary knowledge" - that which is beyond the sense perceptions. This is a transient state. It is neither physical or non-physical. It is like a link between the two. It is not in your current level of experience, because your experience is limited to the five sense organs which cannot perceive non-physical. Those who report near-death experiences are those who could have slipped accidentally into this state. Such an experience occurs when, for some reason, people's physical, mental, and energy bodies have become feeble. If you learn to find conscious access to this dimension, there will be a quantum leap in your ability to know the cosmic phenomenon.

There is also a fifth sheath, the ' anandamayakosha ' , which is beyond the physical entirely. Ananda means "bliss." It has nothing to do with the physical realms of life. A dimension that is beyond the physical cannot be described or even defined, so yoga talks about it only in terms of experience. When we are in touch with that aspect beyond the physical, we become blissful. It is not that a bubble of bliss lies within your physical structure. It is just that when you access this indefinable dimension, it produces an overwhelming experience of bliss.

But bliss is not a goal in itself. Once you touch this dimension of nonexistence, blissfulness is guaranteed. In this state, you are no more an issue in your own life. When you are no more an issue, you can fearlessly explore the beyond.

When you touch this dimension beyond definition, the impact of time and space is obliterated. This accounts for the many stories of yogis sitting unmoving for incredibly long periods of time. This is possible not because of physical endurance, but because in these states, they are not available to the process of time. They have touched a dimension beyond all the contradictions of here and there, now and then; a limitless ocean of emptiness where there is neither bondage nor freedom - an existence beyond existence.

Yoga does not ask you to work with anything other than what you know. It simply tells you that if the physical, mental, and energy bodies are perfectly aligned, you will find access to the bliss body. But your work, as we said before, is only with the first three bodies.

When it comes to external realities, each human being is differently capable. What one does, the other may not be able to do. But when it comes to inner realities, all of us are equally capable. There is no guarantee that you will be able to sing, dance, climb a mountain, or make money, merely because you want to. But making your inner life blissful is something that everyone is capable of. It cannot be denied to you, if you are willing. Once you master certain basic yogic technologies of inner well-being, your journey through life becomes absolutely effortless.
