So, you want to be still, but you are alive and kicking! To bring this life to a certain state of stillness, one must completely dissociate with the activity of the mind. Physiological activity is not a problem — we can still that very easily — it is the psychological structure that is active. You need to understand this, the advantage that the body has over the mind is that even if you keep the body still, it exists. But if the mind becomes still, it does not exist. So, the mind will not let you become still, it will do many things unless you are entirely dissociated with the nature of your mind.

Questioner: Sadhguru, I was wondering whether you could talk about music and dance, which seems to be a big part of Leela. And how do we cultivate receptivity towards that dimension of life?

Sadhguru: It is not that Krishna was always singing and dancing – that was just one part of his life. What is important is that you make your life process into a dance. In the yogic culture, the process of creation or shrishti has always been depicted as a dance of energy, or a dance of five elements. Today, even modern scientists indirectly describe the whole energy process as a dance. Likewise, there is the dance of dissolution. Creation is a dance, – and dissolution also is a dance. It is a scientific fact today that everything in existence is a dance of energy. Whether it is a joyful or a torturous dance is for you to decide, because you have the possibility of using your discrimination to either make yourself blissful or make yourself miserable. But the play of energy is on, all the time.

This is what Leela and Krishna are all about – being “on” all the time – consciously, not compulsively. When life situations compel you, when you act out of compulsion and not out of choice, then it is a great burden to be switched on – you would rather be switched off. Whenever you want to be switched off, unknowingly, you are inviting death. Death may not come straight away; it may come in small measures, because your mind is not vibrant, intense, and focused enough that the moment you wish it, you will fall dead right there. It has happened to people – someone was having a great fight with someone and in great emotion and anger they said, “I want to die,” and they just fell dead, because they wished for it at that moment, and their mind had the intensity to make it happen.

Since your mind does not have this kind of focus and intensity, whenever you want to avoid life, death will happen piecemeal. Most people were really alive when they were young, but except a handful, as they grow older, they are not as alive as they used to be anymore. They may be successful, doing well in the sense that they have money, families, children – everything, but death has happened to them piecemeal. When for example, I happened to meet some of my school and college friends after many years, and I slapped their back and talk to them the way I used to 30 years ago, they looked at me strangely. They were almost 60% dead and could not understand this liveliness.

In so many ways, you try to avoid life and cause a little bit of death to yourself, on a daily basis. That is why, over time, most people do not carry the face of life but the face of death. If someone is around, doing something for them, people may smile, but if they are alone, by themselves, they are the face of death, because they have been inviting death in small measure, moment by moment, on a daily basis.

The whole purpose of Leela is that you are “on” 24 hours a day. You do not choose what is good and what is not, or whether to participate or not. If you do this for some time, you will shake off death. Life is a dance of energy. If you consciously allow yourself to do so, you will dance with it. If you think life should dance in a different way, you will kill yourself in the process. Life is just dancing. A few things may happen your way, but that is not important. The important thing is you are alive and you enjoy the dance of life.

The main reason why you are not in tune with the dance of life is you believe that you are super smart. The cleverest man in the world is always the biggest idiot when it comes to life. You may have your property, your bank balance, or whatever else, but you have missed life.

This childhood meeting of Radhe and Krishna was the beginning of a whole new spiritual path. There are Radhe Panthis and Vishnu Panthis who don’t worship Krishna, they worship only Radhe. They are very huge groups with a large following. If you travel in North India, you will see stickers and posters with just Radhe, no Krishna. Because in her love and her sense of inclusion, she just included him as a part of herself. They say, “There is no Krishna without Radhe.” It’s not the other way around. It is not that there is no Radhe without Krishna. There is no Krishna without Radhe. The word “Radhe” means, Ra means Ras, which means love or juice of life. Dhe means “the giver.”

If you want to taste Krishna, you must become feminine. This is not about being physically male or female. The feminine can be as alive in a man as it is in a woman because the feminine is a certain quality. If you want to know Krishna, you must be willing to become absolutely feminine. This is a path to the ultimate but it is a path of intimacy and tremendous passion. It is a path which does not exclude anything but the very nature of the path is such that once a person steps into it, everything else just disappears. For Radhe, the world does not exist. Only Krishna exists. She is not a good social being but she is an absolutely colorful eternal being.

There is no such thing as ego; it is empty talk.

The nasty part of you, you call it ego.
Wherever you get nasty, you don't want to see, "It is me who is nasty." You want to say, "Oh, it is my ego."

This is another way of passing the buck.
There is no ego. There is just you, and you, and you alone.

The significance of human nature is that you have the direction to decide how God should function within you.

This is not a small choice, not a small responsibility, not a small honor. Is it a small honor that you can decide how God should function?

Most people are letting this go by, not realizing what is being bestowed upon them.

When an individual dreams, it is called a fantasy. When a group of people dream, it becomes a society. When the universal dreams, it generally passes off as reality. A dream is a certain reality, and reality is a certain dream. The best thing about a dream is, when you wake up, it’s over. So it is with the so-called reality – when you wake up, it’s over. Medically, if we check the parameters of your body in sleep, it is just in a slightly lower state – you could be meditating. So sleep is just a more relaxed state of wakefulness, or wakefulness is a more agitated state of sleep.

Is this some kind of play of words, some kind of entertainment that we can think, “Okay, dream and wakefulness are the same, reality and dream are the same?” It is not so. You know reality only the way your senses interpret it for you. You do not know it the way it is. So what you call “reality” is an interpretation of your mind, what you call “dream” is also an interpretation of your mind. Whatever happens in your mind is another kind of reality. We can call it “psychological reality.” For most people, their dream is far more powerful than their thought process. Unfortunately, they don’t remember most of it.

What you consider as divine, what you consider as God is essentially that which is the source of creation, isn’t it? If you pay little attention to the creation, whether to a flower or a leaf or an ant, if you just pay enough attention to the ant – I am sure you have not, because they have no orthopedic issues – but if you pay enough attention to a simple ant, it is such a phenomenal mechanism. You can’t find another machine like that. The efficiency with which it moves with those eight legs is an incredible thing.

So if you look at any piece of creation one thing that it smacks of is intelligence of the highest kind, isn’t it? Why is it nobody said ‘God is intelligence’? – people are saying ‘god is love, god is this, god is that’ all these things we are capable of. An intelligence beyond ourselves is what our problem is, isn’t it? Yes or no? Even a dog is very loving. Not just God; we don’t know about God but dogs are very loving, aren’t they? Yes or no? We are giving all the wrong qualities. If you pay attention to the creation you will see whatever is the source of creation – its intelligence is unbeatable, isn’t it? Why is it that nobody ever said ‘God is intelligence?’ Unfortunate, isn’t it?

Give it more time, rather than getting frustrated or comparing yourself to someone else. When practicing yoga, never compare yourself to others. Work with where you are right now. Do not try to do what others are doing. Once you compare yourself to others, competition is inevitable. So, no comparison, but do not spare yourself. You must always go to your fullest, but do not try to be like someone else. This is a fundamental discipline you have to bring into your life if you want to progress on the spiritual path.

Even if people come to us because of their backache, we want to set up the process towards the ultimate for them. How far they go is left to them. If you put in more time, you will see, once you go beyond a certain point, so many things which you thought were a part of you are suddenly not there anymore. This is the nature of the sadhana. So do not compare yourself with someone else and frustrate yourself. That is not necessary at all.

One fundamental goal of yoga is to put your life and your karmic cycle on fast-forward. Today, finding a solution for your backache or some psychological issue may be your focus, but ultimately, the goal is mukti. When you put your karmic cycle on fast-forward, the suffering that you would have had in a diluted form over 20 years may come to you in a concentrated form in 2 years or 2 weeks – and that is good. When you work through that, you will come to a plateau where, if you look back, you cannot believe you went through all these things. Every sadhaka goes through such phases.

' Adi Guru '

Ascetics distance
The stoic stance

All this they bore
And He could not ignore

Seekers so intense
Broke his obstinate stance

Celestial sages seven
Strived not in search of Heaven

But to find a way for every human
To find a way beyond hell and heaven

They toiled for their race
He could not withhold his Grace

He turned his sacred face
To south to look upon their race

They not only beheld his divine face
But held the downpour of ultimate space

As the Beginningless One flowed
In knowing, seven sages overflowed

To release the world
From its crusted mold

To this day the sacred knowing flows
We will not rest until every vermin knows

In an intimate conversation en route to Kailash, Sadhguru addressed a seeker’s probing questions about the need of devotion and a Guru on the spiritual path.

Questioner: Sadhguru, there are moments when I feel devotion, and at other times, my own will pops up. Given that, can I consider myself a devotee or not?

Sadhguru: There is no human being on the planet who has never experienced moments of devotion, moments of love, moments of joy, and moments of bliss at some time or the other. That does not mean it is your basic quality. One moment of devotion does not make you a devotee. Only when devotion has become the essential quality of your being, are you a devotee. Every human being has an element of devotion. The question is whether they have brought it to a point where it has become the dominant force and the guiding light in their life.

Questioner: If that is the case, can someone be your disciple but not your devotee?

Sadhguru: This is a progression. A lot of people initially either come as curiosity seekers, or sometimes as investigators. Then they think there is something to learn here, and they become like a student. If what they learn begins to transform their lives in some way, they naturally become disciples. When learning, transformation, and everything else becomes irrelevant, when the focus of your life becomes one-pointed, then you become a devotee.

Questioner: But Sadhguru, could I not just follow the path of spirituality through the practices that are given without becoming a devotee, without surrendering everything to the Master?

Sadhguru: Devotion need not necessarily be to a person. Devotion is a certain way to be. If you are on the path, not off and on, but in every moment of your life, you are a devotee. You do not have to be a devotee of anything or anyone in particular. You can be a devotee because devotion is your quality.

Questioner: So if someone has been initiated by you, but he or she is only devoted to the path and not to you as a person, then also, he or she is a devotee?

Sadhguru: What you refer to as the Guru and what you refer to as the path are not different. One is personified, another is not, but they are the same thing. If they are different, they are no good.

Questioner: Sadhguru, you yourself said you walked the path of spirituality for three lifetimes without a Guru.

Sadhguru: The Ultimate did not happen because I differentiated between path and Guru. That way, you may get better lungs, you may get many capabilities, you may become a superhuman. But still, the most significant thing does not happen as long as you make a distinction between path and Guru. As for me, I did so because I was brought up in a tradition where it was always said that the real thing can only happen through Shiva – no other human being can ever do the Ultimate for you. So, accepting another human being as a Guru was out of question.

When the Guru came and the Ultimate did happen, though experientially, it was 100% clear to me that this is it, still there was a little bit of a question why Shiva did not come. At that moment, the Guru took the form of Shiva. It was such a childish desire, but he catered to it and appeared as Shiva.

Questioner: Do seekers need to have a personified Guru? Have there not been many Shaivite saints like Akka Mahadevi, Allama Mahaprabhu, and others who did not have a Guru but were devoted to Shiva or whoever else, and they still got enlightened?

Sadhguru: I think Shiva was their devotee. Another thing is you cannot say they did not have a Guru, because they embraced Shiva completely. He was a living force for them.

Questioner: But wasn’t Shiva a living force for you too?

Sadhguru: He was. Otherwise, I would not have come that far. The Guru did not really push me as such. He just gave me a little nudge, because I had been sitting on the edge for too long.

Questioner: So as a devotee, I can embrace the path itself and not necessarily have a Guru in a physical, human form?

Sadhguru: The path is the Guru and the Guru is the path – there is no difference between the two. The mistake is that we differentiate. Once you differentiate between the two, it becomes unnecessarily complex.
