It is the hand that lifts, but you say "I lift".
The eyes see but you say, "I see".
The nose smells, but you say, "I smell".
All this is the power of the Self and yet you say, "I did it".
That power belongs to God.
Who is this ego arrogating 'I'?
He has no place in the palace, but once admitted inside, he overrules the king and affirms his own existence.
But after some enquiry, this ego's existence is easily disproved.
Then the king once again affirms, "I am Reality."
There is one thing about this condition – there is bliss.
If there are two, then there is pain.
Where there is One, there is bliss.

The Supreme is the easiest to reach for it is your very being.
It is enough to stop thinking and desiring anything but the Supreme.
It is enough to stop thinking and desiring anything but the Supreme.
Everything must be scrutinized and the unnecessary ruthlessly destroyed. Believe me, there cannot be too much destruction.
For in reality nothing is of value.
Be passionately dispassionate – that is all.

The universe is a cosmic joke. It plays games with you.
It wants you to become attached to things.
You cannot possibly find yourself when you are engrossed in the world.
So you do not have to keep thinking about your affairs
and your body and the world most of the time.
You must begin to understand that you are the only one who can
dissolve the maya and awaken to the truth of your being.
You can tell where you're at by what you do all day long.
Just think about today, since you woke up this morning.
How often did you think about your higher Self.
How often did you practice self-inquiry.
How often did you surrender completely.
Not too much, you identified yourself with the worldly situation.
You identified with maya.
With things, with persons, with places and then you tell me
I want to awaken. I want to become self-realized.
Of course the truth is that you're already self-realized, you know that,
but those are just words.
What are you doing to prove it?
It wants you to become attached to things.

If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is. If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there’s room to hear more subtle things - that’s when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more. Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before. It’s a discipline; you have to practice it.
TRUST IN THE POWER THAT KNOWS THE WAY
You see, you live in a universe which is self-existent, self-abiding, self-sufficient. This means that all of your needs are met from within. ALL OF YOUR NEEDS ARE MET FROM WITHIN. But this will only happen when you accept it this way. If you think that your needs have to come from a person, place or thing, you’ve always get a fight on your hands because you’re hoping to get a better job or get some money in the bank or that someone will come along and help you with some problem. These are all erroneous thoughts. If you could only learn to rely on the Self, miracles would take place in your life!
If you can only learn to rely on the Self. How do you learn to rely on the Self? By trusting life. Trusting life just the way it is. I’m not saying to trust certain people, or to trust certain conditions, certain situations. I’m saying just to trust life. To trust life you go beyond people, places and things. You trust the substratum of all existence. You trust Consciousness. In other words, you feel and believe in your heart that there is a power that knows the way. You came out of it. So you’re That also. For you are It. You are that power yourself. And you feel good about it. This is what I mean when I say, trust the power that knows the way.
There’s nothing to fix in your life. Nothing to change. Nothing to accomplish. Nothing to do. Except to abide in the power that knows the way. Ifs so simple yet it’s so hard for some of us. And it’s hard because we allow the thoughts to come to us and spoil everything. You have to control your thoughts, control your thinking. When you are free from thinking, you will always abide in Consciousness, which is the power that knows the way.
And soon you’ll find yourself becoming happier and happier every day.
Peaceful. Harmonious.
What can really disturb you and make you sad, make you afraid? Only something that you think may happen to you. But if you’re living in the eternal now, if you exist this moment, and you do, in this moment is there a problem? There’s no problem in this moment. It’s only when you begin to think of tomorrow or the next week or the next week that you think of problems. But if you learn to stay centered in the moment where nothing is happening, this moment will become the next moment. And the next will become the next hour, the next day, the next week, and the next year.

When there is a hurricane, at the centre of it there is a peaceful spot.
The centre is peace.
There is nothing happening in that centre. When there is disharmony going on, anger, frustration, fear. At the centre of the anger there is peace.
At the centre of the fear there is peace.
If you can only dive in there long enough and dive past the external condition and dive into the peace.
Then you will become one with the peace and the anger will dissipate, it will be gone, it will disappear.
Due to the fact in reality the anger never existed. The fear never existed. Only the Self exists, consciousness, pure awareness. And that is at the centre of yourself and the condition.

I AM CALLING YOU BACK TO YOURSELF.....
Q: What benefit do I derive from listening to you?
M: I am calling you back to yourself. All I ask you is to look at yourself, towards yourself, into yourself.
Q: To what purpose?
M: You live, you feel, you think. By giving attention to your living, feeling and thinking, you free yourself from them and go beyond them. Your personality dissolves and only the witness remains. Then you go beyond the witness. Do not ask how it happens. Just search within yourself.
Q: What makes the difference between the person and the witness?
M: Both are modes of consciousness. In one you desire and fear, in the other you are unaffected by pleasure and pain and are not ruffled by events. You let them come and go.
Q: How does one get established in the higher state, the state of pure witnessing?
M: Consciousness does not shine by itself. It shines by a light beyond it. Having seen the dreamlike quality of consciousness, look for the light in which it appears, which gives it being. There is the content of consciousness as well as the awareness of it.
Q: I know and I know that I know.
M: Quite so, provided the second knowledge is unconditional and timeless. Forget the known, but remember that you are the knower. Don't be all the time immersed in your experiences. Remember that you are beyond the experience ever unborn and deathless. In remembering it, the quality of pure knowledge will emerge, the light of unconditional awareness...

If there are ripples on the surface of a lake, we cannot see the depth. Similarly unless the mind is restful, we cannot experience the harmony and union within us.
There are only two ways in which to conquer destiny or be independent of it. One is to enquire who undergoes this destiny and discover that only the ego is bound by it and not the Self, and that the ego is non-existent. The other way is to kill the ego by completely surrendering to the Lord, by realising one’s helplessness and saying all the time: ‘Not I, but Thou, Oh, my Lord’, and giving up all sense of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ and leaving it to the Lord to do what he likes with you. Surrender can never be regarded as complete so long as the devotee wants this or that from the Lord. True surrender is love of God for the sake of love and for nothing else, not even for the sake of salvation. In other words, complete effacement of the ego is necessary to conquer destiny, whether you achieve this effacement through Self enquiry or through bhakti-marga.
Shut your eyes so the heart may become your eye, and with that vision look upon another world
Whenever I look at a thing, I am never located in that place. I am always at the source of every seeing. Perception of all things occurs to, and in, That which is beyond all locations.
All that you are attached to, all that you love,
All that you know, someday will be gone.
Knowing this,
and that the world is your mind
Which you create, play in, and suffer from,
Is known as discrimination.
Discriminate between the Real and the Unreal,
The known is unreal and will come and go
So stay with the Unknown, the Unchanging, the Truth.

For most people to be happy, there has to be a person, place, or thing involved in their happiness. In true happiness, there are no things involved. It’s a natural state. You will abide in that state forever.
For the sprouting of any seed, water is necessary. Similarly for the sprouting of this knowledge 'I am', water and food are necessary. In the essence of the food the quality of 'I amness' is in a dormant state. As salt is in seawater, similarly, in the body, in combination with the vital breath, the consciousness appears. it is the consciousness that feels pain or pleasure not the body or the vital breath. Once you know that you are not the body, all the concepts about pain and pleasure will disappear by themselves.
WESTERNERS
Question: Is it harder for Westerners to withdraw inwards?
Sri Ramana Maharshi: Yes, they are Rajasic (mentally overactive) and their energy goes outwards. We must be inwardly quiet, not forgetting the Self, and then externally we can go on with activity. Does a man who is acting on the stage in a female part forget that he is a man? Similarly, we too must play our parts on the stage of life, but we must not identify ourselves with those parts.
In the West it will be only those disgusted with material life who will earnestly turn to the path.

MIND IS THE UNSTEADY STATE OF ATMA WHEN ENGAGED IN EXTERNAL CORPOREAL HAPPINESS
Deeply absorbed within that place which is
Ever-existing, in dhyana sit
And sing unto your own Self your own song:
In that essence of bliss remain immersed
Looking at all the tricks of your own Self.
Yourself search for your own Self and then be
Enamored of yourself, taking firm stand
Yourself upon your own legs all the while.
There's no one that exists except your Self,
This samsar's nothing but a magic show;
You are the ocean playing with its waves.
Calming these waves seek your own Self and then
Turn back again to look at your own Self.
Being entrapped within the magic coils
Of nature's meshes you forgetful are.
Now, be acquainted with your real Self.
In thought invariable, the Atma you,
Devoid of every change by nature worked.
Be, then your Self, your own!
Real Bhaktas are those who do not pay heed to anything but God and do not even cast a glance at the enjoyment of sense objects.
Those are not real Bhaktas who pray to God to keep their enjoyments intact; it is such people who argue about the merits of knowledge and devotion.
The steadier one becomes, the more one realizes.
When awakened the bodily cravings die out by one’s immersion in the Bliss of the Self; and when by the continuous, undivided ‘I’ feeling the idea of separateness vanishes, the ego disappears.

When will man get peace and contentment?
Tell me what is the good of such a petty, narrow life?
Which never leaves room for feeling for the Universe?
The mind that feels for a small circle (i.e. relations) why does it not feel for the world at large? The mind, which takes a small circle as its own, why does it not consider the world as its own? The affection which is confined to a small circle, why does it not spread all over creation?
The sense of difference is the cause of all sorrows.
Self-knowledge will not down by mere study of books on religious science if one still remains in the darkness of
ignorance. Without Self-realization no one can ever be content. Self-realization is the only peace and contentment. Just think over and ascertain whether there is peace
and contentment in the state in which you now are or in what you are now doing.
You are a physician (the recipient of the letter), you treat others in their illness but have you treated yourself in your disease of birth and death? Engaged in the attempt of removing the insatiable desires of this small circle, what else are you doing? You are also gradually entering the jaws of death. There is no certainty when death will devour you. Even at this moment it may swallow you up.
I am surprised that you should be quite indifferent to this.
Think for once of the great illusion you are in. Instead of advancing sophistical arguments, argue with yourself and come to the right conclusion. By arguing with others no one can realize his own true nature, which is the Infinite.
Onlv after a fight with his desire for enjoyment and defeating it can a man realize his Self and shine as the Infinite.
You are living in a great illusion. Try to save yourself from the grip of the enchantress Expectation.

Don't put your mind in front of you
to represent who you are.
to represent who you are.
What a relief to be empty! Then God can live your life.
When we understand that what we deeply long for can never be found in an object...substance...activity...relationship or state...our longing naturally and effortlessly loses its direction and dynamism and flows back to its source, and is revealed as the happiness for which we were in search...
Meditation will help you to find your bonds, loosen them, untie them and cast your moorings. When you are no longer attached to anything, you have done your share. The rest will be done for you.
To stand alone in true solitude is to stand in the recognition of the absolute completeness and unity of all manner of existence. And from that common ground, where nothing and no one is foreign to you, your love extends across the magnitude of time and embraces the greatest and smallest of things.
Watch the thoughts come and go without identifying with them in any way. If you can resist the impulse to claim each and every thought as your own, you will come to a startling conclusion: you will discover that you are the consciousness in which the thoughts appear and disappear. You will discover that this thing called mind only exists when thoughts are allowed to run free.
Enlightenment is not about words and thoughts and concepts which can be doubted. Enlightenment is always here. By 'here' I don't mean this present space. Here is somewhere within where mind cannot reach. Presence is always here and you are always That. This here is not the opposite of 'there'. This here is nowhere, it is your Heart. When mind is still all comes back to the Heart. All the cosmos is but a speck in your Heart. Turn mind over into this 'here' and it is lost. Then only light, wisdom and love remain and This you are not different or apart from.
There are so many concepts.
There are so many teachings.
You will become a very intelligent idiot.
