Amma - Mata Amritanandamayi Devi

The common expression is `I love you.’ But instead of `I love you,’ it would be better to say, `I am love - I am the embodiment of pure love.’

Remove the I and you, and you will find that there is only love. It is as if love is imprisoned between the I and you. Remove the I and you, for they are unreal; they are self-imposed walls that don't exist. The gulf between I and you is the ego. When the ego is removed the distance disappears and the I and you also disappear. They merge to become one - and that is love. You lend the I and you their reality. Withdraw your support and they will disappear.

Then you will realize, not that `I love you,’ but that `I am that all-embracing love.’

Just relax, because only in relaxation will you realize what is hidden in you. My whole approach is that of let-go; it is not of effort. You just relax and enjoy.

CONTROL OF MIND Vs DESTRUCTION OF MIND

D: When I am engaged in enquiry as to the source from which the 'I' springs, I arrive at a stage of stillness of mind beyond which I find myself unable to proceed further. I have no thought of any kind and there is an emptiness. a blankness. A mild light pervades and I feel that it is myself bodiless. I have neither cognition nor vision of body and form. The experience lasts nearly half an hour and is pleasing. Would I be correct in concluding that all that was necessary to secure eternal happiness (i.e. freedom or salvation or whatever one calls it) was to continue the practice till this experience could be maintained for hours, days and months together?

B: This does not mean salvation; such a condition is termed manolaya or temporary stillness of thought. Manolaya means concentration, temporarily arresting the movement of thoughts; as soon as this concentration ceases, thoughts, old and new, rush in as usual and even though this temporary lulling of mind should last a thousand years it will never lead to total destruction of thought, which is what is called salvation or liberation from birth and death. The practicer must therefore be ever on the alert and enquire within as to who has this experience, who realises its pleasantness. Failing this enquiry he will go into a long trance or deep sleep (Yoga nidra). Due to the absence of a proper guide at this stage of spiritual practice many have been deluded and fallen a prey to a false sense of salvation and only a few have, either by the merit of good acts in their previous births, or by extreme grace, been enabled to reach the goal safely.

CREATIVITY

Maruti(Nisargadatta Maharaj's original name) eventually took on the name Nisargadatta, meaning “naturally (nisarga) given (datta)” or, more loosely, “one dwelling in the natural state.” “Nis-arga” literally means “without parts,” and suggests the unfragmented, seamless, solid Awareness of a sage. As he later told a dear disciple and successor, Jean Dunn: “At one time I was composing poems. Poems used to flow out of me and, in this flow, I just added ‘Nisargadatta.’ I was reveling in composing poems until my Guru cautioned me, ‘You are enjoying composing these poems too much; give them up!’ What was he driving at? His objective was for me to merge in the Absolute instead of reveling in my beingness.”

I advise you to surrender to the Teacher
and listen to him from the inside.
Then let the body become like a machine.
You don't work it, it is just working.
Find the charioteer seated in your Heart
and you will be at Peace always.

Saints must show compassion. One who is desireless is the God of all gods. Be desireless at least once. This can happen only when you ridicule this world and feel that it is untrue. Take your mind off this world and fix it on the Self. The objects are untrue and Brahman is the Truth. When you make this attitude your own, you are through. Then you are at liberty to live as you will. One who
cannot dance finds the ground uneven, but one who wants the knowledge of the Self will somehow get it. Prahlada, a great devotee of
Lord Narayana, was ordered not to take the name of God by his father. Prahlada told his father, "you may be the owner of my body,
yet you have no control over my mind". If you are very busy, identify your mind with Brahman and perform the duty. Then the duty also becomes Brahman. The intellect has to metamorphose. Mentally say, "I am Ram (consciousness)". Then whatever you do becomes Ram (consciousness). Leave the idea `I am so and so' and become the pervader of the whole universe.

Clinging to self-image is a mind game of resistance underpinned by fear of the unknown. On this journey of self-exploration, most discover that as interest in the chatter of mind lessens, an ease and contentment of what is, arises naturally. A consequence of this is a natural fall-off in your interest in taking drugs, alcohol, and eating junk food, coupled with a gladness and ease regarding these changes.

If you practice Self-Inquiry you should do so continuously without stopping, night and day.
By inquiring,
"Who is this person going through this experience?
Who is having these feelings?
Who feels depressed?
Who feels negation?
Who feels that they have been dealt a bad hand in life?
Who feels they're going to die soon?
Who feels all these things?"
Ask your self, inquire within yourself.
The answer is within yourself.
And the answer will come,
"I feel this way.
'I' feel this way.
I feel troubled" Catch yourself saying this and scrutinize the 'I'.
"Where did the 'I' come from?
The 'I' that feels these things.
I've just admitted to myself that I feel this.
But am I, I?
I, I, I.
I, I, I, I, I.
Who is this 'I'?
Am I this 'I'?
I feels tired, I feels sick, I feels depression, I feels it's too good to be true, I feels all of these things", not you!
Not you but "I!"
Therefore the next question you ask yourself is,
"Where does I come from?
What is the source of this 'I'?
Where did it come from?
How did it get here?
Who am I?"
When you get to that point you keep totally quiet and still.

When we talk about Advaita Vedanta we talk about the five elements, the three gunas, the food body.
All this talk is nonsense.
It is exactly what it is, spiritual talk.
Spiritual talk gets you nowhere.
Spiritual talk is for novices.
People who are still debating trying to win points.
Trying to come up with answers.
Asking all sorts of questions.
Debating spiritual points.
All this is nonsense.
So the wise person keeps silent.

You make all kinds of sweets from various ingredients and in various shapes, and they all taste sweet because there is sugar in all of them, and sweetness is the nature of sugar. In the same way, all experiences and the absence of them contain the illumination, which is the nature of the Self. Without the Self they cannot be experienced, just as without sugar not one of the articles you make can taste sweet.

Don’t imagine you will discover the truth by accumulating more knowledge. Knowledge creates doubt and doubt makes you ravenous for more knowledge. You can’t get full eating this way. If you can let go of the Tao with the mind and surround it with your heart, it will live inside you forever.

You have to become more interested in the silent background than in the foreground, the phenomena: thoughts, emotions, sounds, smells, etc. Most people are focused on the foreground and what their five senses bring them, but the Self is discovered in the background. The Self is the source from which the phenomena spring and the ground in which this display of phenomena is happening, from the subtlest feelings and experiences to the grossest matter. When you rest in this background, you can taste your Self. You just give yourself to it.

When a wise man has withdrawn his mind
from all things without, and when
his spirit has peacefully left all inner sensations'
let him rest in peace, free from the movement of will and desire. ...
For it has been said:
There is something beyond our mind
which abides in silence within our mind.
It is the supreme mystery beyond thought.
Let one's mind and subtle spirit rest upon that and nothing else.

When the mind is silent, beyond weakness and distraction,
then it can enter into a world which is far beyond the mind:
the supreme Destination. ...
Then one knows the joy of Eternity.

Do you want to improve the world?
I don't think it can be done.

The world is sacred.
It can't be improved.
If you tamper with it, you'll ruin it.
If you treat it like an object, you'll lose it.

There is a time for being ahead,
a time for being behind;
a time for being in motion,
a time for being at rest;
a time for being vigorous,
a time for being exhausted;
a time for being safe,
a time for being in danger.

The Master sees things as they are,
without trying to control them.
She lets them go their own way,
and resides at the center of the circle.

The guru, the Self are one. There is no difference. A better way to understand this is, the Sage is all-pervading, omnipresent. So in truth there is nothing but the Sage. The Jnani pervades the whole universe. That is how the Jnani or the Sage can pull you in. Because he or she is already within you. They're everywhere, they're everything. In other words there is no personal Sage who does anything. There is only the universal Self that is called the Sage, that is everything.

This is why I tell you so many times, not to read too much.
Not to read too much because when you read too many books on Buddhism and Daoism, on Ramana's books, on Nisargadatta and everybody else in the world, total confusion sets in.
Isn't it better just to sit still at home in the silence and stop the mind from thinking?
That's the easiest way, it's the best way, it's the simplest way.
•~•~•
If you don't believe me, try it.
Try it for a week and see what happens.
For one week I would like you to experiment.
I don't want you to read any book.
Think you can do it?
Don't look at any spiritual literature.
Just sit by yourself as much as you can.
And watch your mind, watch your mind.
Do whatever you have to do to slow down your mind and then you're going to be amazed.
You will laugh at yourself.
For when the mind becomes quiescent, reality will rush in.
And you'll see it's so simple, it's so simple.
Why didn't I know this all the time?
I used to believe by reading volume after volume I'll become enlightened.
But it was so easy, I just had to quiet my mind.

Self-enquiry is certainly not an empty formula and it is more than the repetition of any mantra. If the enquiry ‘Who am I?’ were a mere mental questioning, it would not be of much value. The very purpose of self-enquiry is to focus the entire mind at its source. It is not, therefore, a case of one ‘I’ searching for another ‘I’. Much less is self-enquiry an empty formula, for it involves an intense activity of the entire mind to keep it steadily poised in pure Self-awareness.

To live with your forehead at the master’s feet is to live on top of the world. The real master is the sat guru who is inside your Heart as pure Truth. My blessing for you is that you attain a mind that quickly forgets the time-bound and so is always empty; so much so that an entire universe fits, plays and merges into it without causing a single blemish to it.
