Be nobody.
When you are somebody, there are so many duties that even to be yourself is such a hassle.
When you are nobody, you escape from every trap.
It is immediate freedom!

Playing the simple meditator and keeping a low profile would not be successful - who would know about your realization then? If you happened to be an upstart lama with a penchant for fame and fortune you would have to brag a little. You would need to tell about how many dharma lineages and teachings you held, how long you stayed in retreats, how special your realization is, how you tamed both gods and demons, and the like. Then things would happen; you would be swarmed by sponsors and followers like a piece of rotting meat covered with flies.

Q : Should I abide as the pure “I" and have faith that purity will come?

Sri Papaji :

Don't waste your time in the purity of mind
because mind cannot be pure.

Even the desire to be pure is the trick of the mind.

You will spend many lives purifying the mind,
but it will never be pure.

Look at the story of Vishwamitra and Manika.
After purifying his mind for 10,000 years
he still falls for her instantly.

It is better to just allow your desires to arise and
not let them touch you.

Let them arise and let them be fullfilled.

You simply stay Quiet.

Don't try to become anything,
don't go anywhere
don't do anything
don't undo anything.

Find the source of these concepts and stay there.

This is bliss, nothing else.

This knowledge is bliss.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.

To Vallalar’s compassion we have devoted one full section already.
Vallalar’s path of Suddha Sanmargam could be described as a “path of infinite
compassion, knowledge and felicity”.’ He made it the essential and the single step in
soul making and God-becoming, His views have never been heard before.

"I wish for the great man who is filled with grace who shall all. I shall serve them so they can become the embodiment of Grace Light themselves.
I wish that man whose essence is mercy,
Who sees all life as his own, let him be lighted into the truth and I will
keep him into my soul as God’s children’s.
Whenever I ate appetizing food ,my mind trembled with fear
Wondering what suffering will come out of this joy,
And, therefore often remained with an empty gnawing stomach.
Oh my father I receive whatever loving friends offer me out of love and
“Alas, Oh God, do not let me suffer by these”,
I ate the things with fear in my mind with the awaiting consequences."

Why Vallalar was eating less?
As your vibration and spiritual evolution grow more in
the divine grace, divine amrita or nectar flow in your body and come feeding everyone of your cell. As a consequence if you force yourself to eat food just by desire this will create an incompatibility inside your physical body. These are bringing suffering to the physical body due to the difference of vibration between solid food and ambrosia.

Also every time we eat our food organs have to work. Because of the over use of the inner organs we get older faster and death comes quicker.

Also it is not necessary to eat a lot. If the food is purified hundred of times then a small quantity of food should be good enough.

When our thought ceases and when there is no resistance for the descent of Grace into the diverse bodies the need of solid food will diminish and will be replaced by Divine Amrita, Divine Prana or Divine Grace Light.

He was transparently sincere, transparently humble, transparently saintly and
full of grace. The last infirmity of noble minds—the seeking of fame—also was not his.
Living in God, was self-sufficient:

"As I realized the Divine form revealed to me, I’m enjoying more and
more to integrate it within my system. I would like to be unnoticed by
the world up to when I transform myself completely into a Gnana
Deham body. But the Divine wish and will has revealed mew here I
stand now in the beginning itself. For this my mind is perturbed to
see that I’m not perfect yet."

The last achievement of man the complete conquest of mind was his. He
banished mind from him.
He emerged above the earthly plane to one of different dimensions where
we, ordinary humans, may not follow him.

He slept very little. He advised, in his instructions to his disciples, that one
should sleep only between midnight and three o’clock in the morning. In his
discourses at Mettukkuppam, he advised them to sleep only one hour a day. It is
stated that in his youth he slept three hours a day, then two hours, and then one hour,
and finally, his disciples reported that in the end he did not sleep at all. He addresses
God as ‘You who banished sleep for me’. He says he is apprehensive of sleeping:

"Supreme Light, that shines before and beyond Time,
Have you made me Yours?
I lough to the sleep that comes night or day.
It troubles me that it comes.
Unwilling I sleep; and when
I awake, I call on you and pray,
‘Lord’ when will the sleep be abolished ?"

He banishes sleep:

"Sleep, you silly Idiot, beware!
If, within half an instant of this warning,
You do not leave me, with your brood,
for good, you shall be accursed.
I’ve transcended sorrow. I’ve gained
creative will, and I rejoice, I’m not for you,
Get away and be quick! I’ve behind me
the Lord of the Golden wisdom sphere"

He always dressed in white. His dress consisted of two pieces of long cloth.
No other dress, no other color. The four great Tamil prophets of Saivism of old
were also ascetics in white. Vallalar, in one of his discourses, said:

"Ochre robe represent a struggling aspirant
man who has to fight against his own nature,
One who has subdued his nature has gained
compassion, for him white robe is fitting as a winner aspirant.."

He refers to his white dress in a verse, which describes also certain other
features :

"Shy of swinging arms,
I walked with folded hands;
Averse to be bare,
I covered body and head with white cloth ;
I cast no glance
where smartness sauntered
lest the sight offend me."

This walking picture of Vallalar brings out the quintessential man.

"High-placed seats unsettled me
Sitting cross-legged seems a pose
I dare not sleep on soft bed.
When sitting on a dais, I hardly dare
to stretch down my legs.
Loud talking harrows me—
Spare me these, my mother.
Then, when I ate twice a day,
and slept a long time—you made the sleep
and food serve me for you...
And then, when I ate but once, my father,
People around, puzzled, would question me."

He declared:

"In the flood-tide
of ever-repeated and ever-relished food,
all gains of restraint and penance turn to emptiness
like tamarind thrown in running river."

He does not have any hostile reaction to this people ideas, and do not preach
them, but instead he place his agony before God. The fact that vegetarianism exists on a considerable scale in Tamil Nadu today is largely owing to Vallalar Swamigal. His
disciple Velayuda Mudaliar writes (to quote Mudaliar’s original in English): ‘He
(Ramalinga Swamigal) had a strange faculty about him, witnessed very often, of
changing a carnivorous person into a vegetarian; a more glance from him seemed
enough to destroy the desire for animal food.’

Seeing withered corn, my spirit drooped,
Watching the wretch that begged from door to door
unavailingly, and hungry sank to sleep,
I brooded. At sight of long-racking disease
I shuddered. Starving, poor, too proud to beg,
and spirit-broken, broke me.
O Last Boon, Shining Lord of Ethereal Space,
When I hear of human creatures starving
or spent with hunger, a fear seizes me,
like a fire in the mind, quickly ablaze,
and my body shivers.
Cattle’s lowing turned hoarse
Dismayed me.
Bull and beast ill-fed
Preyed on me.
Quacking fowl and duck
Unhinged me.
Lord, when I saw the murderous knife
Dangling from the butcher’s hand,
I trembled in fear.
When people’s voices rose in squabble
A shivering came on me.
When they knocked at the door in frenzy
It jarred on me.
O Lord, you know, when some one wailed, ‘O father’ or ‘mother’ or ‘Alas’,
The words tore through me
Like an uprooting storm.
O Essence beyond the mind of man,
Final Anchor, my Master,
I, your servant, bound to my kin,
friends, comrades, mother, brothers,
sisters, others, am sore-troubled
to see passing clouds on their faces,
You know.
O Father, Splendor of the Cosmic Stage,
My God, my great Goal,
Need I tell you
the distress that sears my mind
When, in this distressful world,
Mother, comrades, friends,
People near to me, people next to me,
People removed from me,
Suffer, and I see them suffer,
Pangs of hunger, pain of disease.
Scorching afflictions,
Lord, You do know.
Lord, whose dance is blessing
Seed and fruit of final being,
In this passing show of life
Choked by grievous want,
When greyed people and young people ,
known and unknown, recount to me
their trials and tribulations,
My mind trembles and splinters,
Lord, You do know.

Lord of all, Supreme Effulgent Grace! Grant that henceforth our minds are not tainted

Let the awareness of the identity of the soul universal right to love and to be loved by all

People must realize that they must hasten to bring to fruition the rare chance of human
birth given to them.
That fruition consists in gaining the joy of awareness of the pure Effulgent Grace that
shows through all lives, all deeds, all things, all worlds, and thus in gaining the highest
life that is not impeded at any time in any way by anything.
The way to attain this life and this joy is through gaining the Grace which is the natural
quality of God.
There is only one way to attain this Grace, and no other. It is to make the Grace which is
the natural quality of God one’s own natural quality. What is Grace in God is
compassion for Life in man.

Sometimes when my heart is full,
brimming with that joy,
something erupts inside, that I want to tell you.
And I think, Should I say such things?
should I say such things?
Should I tell you, that you are the Christ in Jesus?
you are the Buddha in Siddharhta,
that you are Paramatman in Krishna,
or Brahman in Shiva?
Will you merely inflate yourself with this,
or will you drown in this?

So when I refer to you,
I refer to you as the undivideable,
momentarily dreaming.
Are you up for it?
Are you up for being what
you cannot avoid but be?
I don't know.

So I myself bow to that in you,
towards whom these words point.
and which itself has nothing to accomplish,
but whose joy is in recognising itself,
and to be free of delusion.
I bow to that in you.
Bow to that in yourself.

Bhagavan Nithyananda

On another day, in 1922, his devotees witnessed a dramatic revelation of his Divine Nature. Twenty-five or so devotees had gathered for meditation at seven o'clock in the evening. Suddenly they discovered Nityananda in their midst, crouching and straining, looking as though he were going to vomit. Instead, they saw a huge flash of light around his form. When they approached Nityananda, all signs of life had left his body, which was quickly growing stiff. Immediately word went out that the young Master had entered mahasamadhi. The devotees watched over Nityananda all night. No one touched the body and no doctor was called in. However, they did hold cotton near his nose to see if there was any breath, but none was detected. Suddenly, at four o'clock in the morning, Nityananda began to move.

Completely startled, his devotees placed him on a bed and stretched his limbs. When they put questions to him, Nityananda responded almost incoherently, saying, "The time has not yet come. This one came a little out of place and out of time. The time is not yet. Nobody appreciates and understands the things he does. So he wanted to discard the body and go. But a few sages met and they told this one, 'You go back. You have taken the body, why not use it up?' Let's see, Ramakrishna was there, Vivekananda was there. . ." He mentioned five names, but the people who were around him could not remember them all. In five-minutes he was fully conscious, and would answer no more questions.

There is only the one Self.
An unchanging, unmoving silence.
It is not waiting.
And It is not contemplating.
It is not reflecting.
It is not inquiring.
It is not resting.
All this could be perceived as modes of the mind itself.
What is that which is not in gear?
It is not a state.
It is not in between states.
It is not the gap between thoughts.
It is not a gap.
It cannot be done or undone.
For Itself, there is no such thing as practice.
No such thing as contemplators, meditators or attainers of It.
Hidden, yet nothing can hide It.
Revealed, yet nothing can see It.
Self-knowing, yet It is without knowledge.
Self-realised, yet It is without mind.
Blessing itself, yet It is beyond duality.
Being, yet It is beyond being.
Unfathomable, unconquerable, ungraspable.
Who or what is there?
Beyond sin and beyond righteousness.
It announces Itself as the sense 'I am' inside the body.
But It is even beyond 'I' and beyond body.
Ungraspable, yet attention and the pure intellect
may recognise and acknowledge It.
Being revealed but It is not revealing.
Recognising Its all-pervasiveness, joy fills the Heart.
Intelligence dances.
Peace is very happy.
The universes prostrate themselves,
yet their Lord they cannot see.

Shiva Sahasra Namam - Thousand Names of Lord Shiva from Mahabharata

Translation & Transliteration by P. R. Ramachander

There are two versions of Shiva sahasranama-one in lInga Purana (Being taught by Lord Krishna to sage Markandeya) and the other which occurs in Anushasanika Parva of Mahabaratha.
In the Mahabaratha version (which I am giving here) Yudishtra after hearing the Vishnu Sahasranama from Bheeshma requests him also to teach the thousand names of Lord Shiva. Bheeshma expresses his inability to the same and requests Lord Krishna to teach it to Yudishtra. Then Lord Krishna who has learnt it from Sage Upamanyu teaches it to Yudishtra. A bhashya (explanation) for this was written by7 Sri Chathurthara Neela Kanda called “Bharatha bhava pradheepam”. Based on this Sri.N.Subramanya Iyer (lovingly called “Anna (elder brother) by his admirers wrote a detailed interpretation in Tamil which was published initially by the Sarada Peetham, Sringeri. Later they gave the publishing rights to Ramakrishna Mutt of Madras. My feeble attempt, to give an English meaning to this Shiva Sahasranama is based on this great book. I have not attempted to give meaning with interpretation as done in the above book.
This book gives 1008 names of Lord Shiva. While 45 names are repeated twice, 11 are repeated thrice and three names are repeated four times. Readers may observe that different meanings are given to these repetitions.

To tell you about the various names of the god of gods.

Esha shaktho maha bahur vakthum bhagawatho gunaan,
Vibhuthim chaiva karthsynyena sathyaam Maheeswari nrupa. 16

Oh king , that great armed one ,
Is the one capable of telling the properties of God,
And capable of fully telling you truthfully,
The powers of The great God.

Sura sura guro deva vishno thwam vakthumarhasi,
Shivaaya shiva roopaya yanma aprucha yudishtra. 17

Hey Teacher of Devas and asuras, Hey Vishnu,
It is but very proper, that you tell,
About the great god, which Yudishtra asked.

Those thousand names of God told by sage Dandi,
Who was the knower of Brahmam,
Which was told in the land of Brahmas,
With lord Brahma as a witness,
May please be heard by these sages,

Sage Upamanyu told:-
I pray him , using those names,
Which have been read by Brahma and other sages,
Which have arisen from Vedas and Vedangas,
And which are famous throughout the world.

Mahadhbhir vihithaisathyai Sidhai sarvartha sadhakhai,
Rishinaa thandinaa bhakthya kruthai –veda kruthathmana. 26

These names have been praises by the great,
They are true and give occult powers,
They help you to get any job done,
And have been told by Sage Dandi,
Whose heart is immersed in Vedas.

Yadhokthai Sadhubhi khyathai munibhisthathwa darshibhi,
Pravaram pradhamam swarga sarva bhootha hitham shubham. 27

I pray ,who does good to all beings,
Who is worshipped by good me,
Who is worshipped by sages and philosophers,
Who is the first among all,
And who can grant us heaven,
Using those famous , well known names.

Sruthai sarvathra jagathi Brhma loka avatharithai,
Sathyai sthath pramam , brhma brhma proktham sanathanam,
Vakshye yadu kula sreshta srunushvava hitho mama. 28

Oh Chief of the clan of Yadus,
Please here from me with concentration those names
Which came from the world of Brahma,
Which are found based in the Vedas,
Which are every where,
And which are truth
And I salute that great God who is Brahmam,
And is worshipped by Lord Brahma.

Varayainam bhavam devam bhakthasthvam parameshvaram,
Thena they sraviyishyami yahad brahma sanathanam. 29

Oh Krishna , who is his devotee,
Please worship that Parameshwara,
Who is the source of the world,
And Who is the god of gods,
And for that purpose,
I am making you hear the following.

Na sakyam vistharath kruthsnam vakthum sarvasya kenachith,
Yukthenaapi vibhoothinaa Mapi varsha sathair api. 30

Even though one has all abilities and fame,
It is just impossible for them to narrate fully,
All the greatness of Shiva even in hundred years.

Yasyadhir Madhya mantham cha surair api na gamyahe,
Kasthasya shakthuyadwaktham gunaan karsnyena madhava. 31

Hey Madhava,, Who will have the ability ,
To describe in full, the qualities of him,
Whose head or foot was not found by the devas?

Kinthu devasya mahatha samkshipthartha padaksharam,
Shakthi thascharitham vakshye prasadathasya dheematha. 32

In spite of that I would tell you in short,
According to my limited capacity,
Using limited words and letters,
The story of him, who is the source of wisdom,
Because of his grace and blessing.

Aaprapya thu thatho anugnaam na sakya sthothumeeswara,
Yada thennabhyanugnath sthutho vai sa thada maya. 33

Since it is not feasible to pray him ,
Without his permission and grace,
I was able to sing his prayers,
When I was blessed by him.

Anaadi nidanasyaaham jagadyoner mahatmana,
Naamnaam kanchith samudhesyam vakshamya vaktha yonina. 34

I will tell you a few names approximately ,
Of that great one who is the origin of the world,
And who cannot find origin for himself.

Thaani nirmadhya manasa dhadhno druthamivodhbudham. 36

These thousand names are the result of churning,
Similar to getting butter from curd,
Out of the ten thousand names told by Brahma.

Gire saaram yadha hema pushpasaaram yadha madhu,
Gruthatsaaram yadha mandastha Dhaithath sara samudrutham. 37

This essence has been taken after serious thought,
Like the gold is taken out of mines,
Honey is taken out of flowers,
And ghee is taken out of butter.

Sarva paapahamidham chathur veda samanvitham,
Prayathnenadhi ganthavyam dharyanj cha prayathathmana. 38

Is one with the four great Vedas,
Could be understood by great effort,
And could be committed to memory through effort.

Yacchuthwa manuja vyagra sarvaan kaamaanvapsyathi. 39

Sati and Uma

Although Shiva is worshipped as the ruler of the Three Worlds, his power, or Sahkti, is represented by his wife, the Devi (Goddess).
Shiva married Sati against the wishes of her father, Daksha. When Daksha performed a ritual sacrifice invited all the Deva, but not Shiva. Sati was hurt by the insult to her husband, and when she questioned her father, received only harsh words. Sati, devastated, fixed her mind on her Lord, and invoking the Tapas' flames immolated her body in them.
Sati, in her love and devotion to Shiva, took rebirth as Parvati to be with Him again.
In other tales it is said that Uma Haimavati (uma = light), looking at Shiva in despair for Sati's death, took pity on His endless grief and revealed herself as Parvati, to comfort Him.

Uma - The Golden Goddess

Once a rishi was imparting to his student's spiritual knowledge. When a lesson was over, the students were free to ask questions on the day’s lesson. One day the students asked: "Sir, who makes the mind desire? Who makes the eyes to see, the ears hear and the tongue speak?"
The rishi said: "The One Great God causes all these things. He is everywhere. He is the source of all things. He who understands this truth becomes immortal." But the students said they did not understand him. So the rishi told them a story.
Once the Devas won a battle against the Asuras. The Devas, however, did not realise that it was the Great God who made them win. The Devas thought they won the war by their own strength and in their ignorance they became proud of what they had achieved. The Supreme God or Brahman wanted to cure them of their pride, so he suddenly appeared before them. The Devas could not say who it was, all that they could know was that it was a wonderful Being, so they decided to find out who it was.
First they sent Agni, the God of fire, to find out whom it was. When Agni went to the Strange Being, the latter asked, "Who are you?" Agni replied: "I am Agni, the powerful. I can burn anything in this or other worlds. I know everything!" The Supreme Being said: "Oh! Is that the fact? Look, here is a blade of grass. Burn it, if you can!" "Pooh!" said Agni and rushed upon the blade of grass. Try however much he did, he could not even touch the edge of the grass. Ashamed of his failure, he returned to the Devas and admitted his defeat.
The Devas next sent Vayu, the wind good, to find out whom that Strange Being was. "Who are you?" asked the Being. "I am Vayu, the great. I can sweep away anything in this world with my power." "Can you really," said the Being. "Please sweep away this blade of grass. Vayu rushed at it, but the straw did not move an inch. Vayu too returned to the Devas and reported his failure.
Then the Devas sent Indra, their King, to the Strange Being. When Indra went, the Strange Being was no longer to be seen, but in its place stood a charming woman. She was Uma, the Goddess of spiritual knowledge. Indra asked Uma: "Great Lady! Who was that Strange Being that was here!" Uma replied: "Fool! It was Brahman, the Supreme Being. It was he that won the battle against the Asuras for you. Not knowing it, you bragged amongst yourselves. He came here to teach you how worthless your powers are without His grace, and to cure you of your pride!"
On hearing this, Indra went back and reported this matter to the Devas. Then the Devas realised their mistake and begged to be forgiven. Later, they learnt the sacred knowledge about God, in humility.
The rishi said finally: "This knowledge comes in a flash. We must pursue and develop it further. That is our object in life; for, God is Truth. All knowledge is His limbs. Penance and doing good to others are the means of furthering that knowledge."
This story occurs in the great Upanishad called Kena.

The Four Wives

There was a rich merchant who had four wives. He loved the fourth wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the third wife very much. He was very proud of her and always wanted to show her off to his friends. However, the merchant was always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.

He too, loved his second wife. She was a very considerate person, always patient and in fact was the merchant's confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his second wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.

Now, the merchant's first wife was a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, "Now I have four wives with me. But when I die, I'll be alone. How lonely I'll be!"

Thus, he asked the fourth wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the fourth wife and she walked away without another word. The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart.

The sad merchant then asked the third wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the third wife. "Life is so good over here! I'm going to remarry when you die!" The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the second wife, "I always turned to you for help and you've always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the second wife. "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.

Then a voice called out: "I'll live with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go."

The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, "I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!"

Actually, we all have four wives in our lives.

The fourth wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leaves us when we die.

Our third wife are our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.

The second wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we're alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

The first wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure. Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it's a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament.
